Mason-Dixon knocks it out of the park selling 120 raffle tickets at the Outdoor Show!

The Mason-Dixon family pulled it together and ended the week selling 120 gun raffle tickets at the NRA’s Great American Outdoor Show. The Beardsleys and the Reeds worked hard and sold 29 tickets last Sunday but they were no match for the Simmons and Sauers combo who sold a whopping 91 tickets yesterday!!!!!!! Thanks to their awesome efforts the team will receive over $3000 donated to its MidwayUSA Foundation endowment account.

I special thank you goes out to Skip Klinger and the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association for making this opportunity available to area youth shooting teams. Palmyra has been a great partner and friend to Mason-Dixon and we truly appreciate their continued support!!!!!!

Thanks again to all who helped and gave their time. Mason-Dixon ROCKS!!!

SCTP/SPP National Championships Update

This information just came in from the SCTP/SPP Headquarters….. I know many of you have been asking about Nationals and how the closing of the World Shooting Complex would affect us. Well it looks like they have officially locked down their dates however the location has yet to be deterred. We love Sparta and I hope things work out but the SCTP/SPP leadership is doing its due diligence by making sure that we have a SCTP/SPP National Championship to go to in July.

The rumblings that I have heard is that if Nationals is not in Sparta, the SCTP/SPP National Championship will be held at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH. I have hedged my bets and booked a “easy cancel” room at the Hampton Inn Columbus/Delaware I-71 North. If you’re kicking around the idea of attending nationals with us in July you may want to do the same.

In addition, I was also able to book 10 rooms at the Holiday Inn Express in Sparta so if the shoot doesn’t move we will once again have the best place in town. I was able to booked the rooms with the condition that if Nationals moves the contract will be canceled.

WARNING: please do not make any plans that are not easily canceled! THINGS MAY CHANGE!

FOR STATE ADVISORS – National Championships Update

Dear State Advisors,

As many of you are aware, the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL, has been the home of our Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) National Championship events for several years running. As of October 1, 2015, the complex was closed for all shooting events due to unresolved budget issues within Illinois state government and remains closed to this date. The SSSF has not received any news or timeline for a possible re-opening at this point.

We know many of your team’s coaches and families are trying to plan 2016 vacations, time off work, kids’ schedules, etc. to attend this event and are requesting event details. We want to let you know that at this time, we are able to confirm the dates of the 2016 SCTP and SPP National Championships will be July 9 – July 16, 2016. The confirmation of the event location is still being finalized, and we plan to have the final location along with tentative event schedule announced prior to January 16, 2016.

Please keep in mind that our program and foundation staff are doing everything possible to plan another successful National Championship event that so many of our SCTP and SPP program families come to expect each and every year. Providing a high-quality national tournament for SCTP and SPP teams is a priority for us, and we will continue to keep you posted as soon as we have further details.

Thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,

Ben Berka
SSSF President and Executive Director

The World Shooting Complex, home of the SCTP/SPP Nationals, in Sparta remains closed and the Illinois budget has yet to be finalized. That means, as of today, there is no set date or location for the 2016 SCTP/SPP Nationals. As soon as I hear any new news I will pass it on.

Registration for the 2016 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters is now open!!!

Registration is now open for the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters 2016 Season. We have openings in all four of our Disciplines. Please read the registration package carefully and follow all instructions. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to give me a call. Key things you’ll need to know:

Eligibility: Our program is open to boys and girls 12* through 23 years old who are strong and mature enough to handle and firearm safely. Shooting experience is beneficial but not required. Beginners should start in either the Trap or Speed Shooting Disciplines. *Anyone under 12 years old must receive permission from Head Coach prior to joining.

We are not a drop off program. Parents/Guardians are required to attend and help. Our organization is operated with an all volunteer team of adults. As we have grown, more help has been needed. Please consider volunteering in some manner. If everyone does one job/responsibility, and does it well, we will continue to improve and provide a quality shooting program.

Disciplines: Our Shotgun disciplines are Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. Our Pistol discipline is Speed Shooting. All are taught by trained and supportive adult coaches. There are a limited number of openings in each discipline. Openings will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Once filled these Disciplines will be closed and additional members will not be accepted.

This is a team sport. Your teammates are depending on you to attend the practices and competitions you sign up for. Please make sure you review the schedule and you don’t over extend yourself. Commit to what you signed up for.

Costs: As you will see in the [download id=”126″] , we have included the approximate value of everything that’s included in each Discipline. Costs listed do not include ammunition. It is the athlete’s responsibility to provide ammunition for all practices and competitions. That said, there is a strong possibility that the team will be receiving some sort of ammunition grant again this year. If that happens, we will be distributing whatever ammo we receive to our participants.

Practices and Competitions schedules are subject to change. We will try our best to hold to our schedule however weather and scheduling conflicts may postpone and/or cancel some events. Refunds will not be given for events that are canceled.

Coaches Requirements – Corrections

It was brought to my attention that I made a few errors with the information I sent out last week. I believe I have fixed everything in the 8 steps posted below. If you have previously coached with Mason-Dixon please look over the  Coaches Requirement Check List and see what you may need to complete. Basically if you don’t see a “check” or a “box” in the row next to you name it needs to be done.

  6. If you have NOT been a resident of Pennsylvania for all of the past ten (10) years:
  7. If you are a new coach, or if you neglected to do it last year, you must complete the following:
  8. You have two choices to return everything, whatever option you take please insure that your copies are legible.

Calling all Coaches!!!!

Hello All, this is just a reminder…. If you plan to help coach with Mason-Dixon I need you to get your background checks done and your paperwork in to me as soon as possible. In order for us to comply with all the new laws, and adhere to our insurance policies, no one will be allowed to be up on the line working with the shooters without having all of the paperwork and background checks complete. Unfortunately this requirement is nonnegotiable.

Some of you have sent in your information…Thank You! So that everyone knows where they stand I have created a document that list all of our coaches with the requirements that need to be completed. Please look over the document and take care of anything that needs to be done.

Coaches Requirement Check List

To help make things a little easier I tried to condense the steps needed to get everything done.

If you want to help coach you need to do the following:

  1. For Trap, Skeet, and/or Sporting Clays:
  2. For Pistol:
  3. Fill out, sign, and return the INTAKE FORM FOR VOLUNTEERS
  4. If you have been a resident of Pennsylvania for all of the past ten (10) years:
  5. If you have NOT been a resident of Pennsylvania for all of the past ten (10) years:
  6. Finally, if you are a new coach, or if you neglected to do it last year, you must complete the following:

You have two choices to return everything, whatever option you take please insure that your copies are legible.

  1. Mail paper copies of everything to:

Mason-Dixon Clay Busters
213 Pine Street
Glen Rock, PA 17327

  1. Scan and email electronic copies to:

coach@masondixonclaybusters.com

I know that this is a royal pain in the butt and we can’t afford to lose anyone due to all this stupid stuff, but I can’t stress enough how important this is to the future of our program. I value everyone’s time and commitment to the program and I would be more than happy to meet with you and walk you through the process. I can bring along my laptop and printer and we can knock everything out in about an hour.

And the winner is…..

Sorry for the delay in getting this out. Marcia and I have been running up and down the east coast the past few weeks so hopefully things will settle down and get back to normal. Returning athletes, get your SCTP paperwork in if you want to lock in your spot on next team, or if plan take advantage of the Black Friday shoot at Blue Ridge. With things back to normal I’ll be able to finalize the Mason-Dixon schedule and open our registration up to everyone by mid to late November.

And the winner is….. The competition was close with some spots coming down to the final week!

Finishing in the top spot and this year’s High Over All (HOA) combined Trap & Skeet winners are Tori Mann (93.17) for Raw Score and Jeremy Adkins (97.42) for Handicapped. Congratulations to Tori and Jeremy for some outstanding shooting!

Moving on to our Skeet Division. Starting with Raw Score, Dawson Sterner (45.88) finishes in first place with Sam Rooney (38.75) taking second and Elijah LaBrozzi (37.13) finishing third. In Handicapped, Jacob Lloyd (48.43) finishes in first place with Adam Simmons (47.26) taking second and Chloe Sterner (46.88) finishing third.

In our Trap Division. Again starting with Raw Score, Nathan Metzger (47.13) finishes in first place with David Bell (42.50) taking second and Elijah LaBrozzi (42.13) finishing third. In Handicapped, Dawson Sterner (48.25) finishes in first place with Jacob Lloyd (47.77) taking second and Robbie Carpenter (47.68) just edging out Gianna Patti (47.43) for third.

The awards are on the way and as soon as they arrive I will schedule an evening to do the presentations. I want to thank everyone who participated in Mason-Dixon’s first ever ePostal League.  Especially the parents and helpers who took on a leadership role and helped organize and score for the kids. Overall I think things went very well but I value your opinion so if you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to pass them on.

Don’t forget; get your SCTP paperwork in and sign up for the Blue Ridge Black Friday Shoot!!!!

Early SCTP Registration… additional information

The new SCTP season officially kicked off on September 1st. Once again, we are giving our returning athletes an opportunity to sign up for the SCTP and lock in their spots on the 2016 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters before any remaining openings are made available to the public. This early registration period will accomplish two things:

  1. It will give us an accurate count as to how many openings the team will have next year.
  2. Allow returning athletes to be covered under the SCTP insurance policies and participate in any events that we may have between now and spring.

I know it’s early to start thinking about next spring but I really need to get this done since I’m already receiving inquiries from new shooters who want to join Mason-Dixon next year.

Beginning today and ending November 17, 2015, we will be accepting 2015-16 SCTP membership forms and payments from returning athletes. This early registration cost $20 and only covers the 2015-16 SCTP registration fees. Costs for practices and competitions are being worked on as we speak and will be made available in our 2016 Registration Package due out in mid to late November. I do not anticipate any significant increase in the fees from last year, it may even go down slightly for athletes who participate in more than one discipline.

To complete the early registration process, download and fill out the [download id=”118″]. Once complete mail the signed [download id=”118″] forms along with a check for $20 made out to “Mason-Dixon Clay Busters” to 213 Pine Street, Glen Rock PA 17327. Please make sure you mail signed originals as copies are not accepted by the SCTP.

If you would like to renew your ATA/AIM memberships at the same time please include an additional $25 ($45 will cover both SCTP and ATA/AIM).  There are no additional forms to fill out for ATA/AIM, just the fees. The SCTP gets credit for the ATA/AIM renewal if it’s done at the same time as the SCTP registration. If you don’t want to do it now, or you already renewed your ATA/AIM membership it’s not a big deal.

So the Reader’s Digest version is…. If you plan to shoot with the team again, get your early registration paperwork in ASAP and lock in your spot. That way if something fun comes up between now and spring you’ll be able to participate.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to having you all back with us next year!!!!!!

Early SCTP Registration for Returning Athletes

All Clays Tournament at Loch Raven, October 10, 2015

Just passing this on…This is not an official Mason-Dixon event but I think some of our athletes would do VERY well at this shoot!!!!!

The Loch Raven Skeet & Trap Center (LRSTC) will be holding a special All Clays Tournament for the third year in a row. The All Clays Tournament is being held on Saturday, October 10, 2015. First rounds start at 10am . Get there early and sign in and get your tickets. This shoot is open to all friends and members. This is a special shoot with a very unique format.

Sign up and shoot (2) rounds of Skeet, (2) rounds of Trap, (1) round of Wobble and (1) round of 5-Stand. There is a sign-up sheet on the front counter in the clubhouse. Shooters may shoot the gun of their choice at each event or the same gun in all of them. The events are shot in no particular order. The scores from each event will be combined for a total of 150 targets . One champion will be decided with ties broken by 5-Stand simultaneous pairs. Cash prizes will then be awarded based on a Lewis Class model.

The event will have an entry fee of $45 , which is a few bucks more than last year because of the additional rounds of Skeet and Trap. However, $5 of the entry fee will be returned to the pot. Also lunch will be provided. This shoot is set up to provide a venue for all of our members and friends to get together in a setting of friendly competition. So plan ahead, come on out to meet and mix with the rest of the Center’s members and friends, enjoy the fall shooting weather and have a good time breaking clays.

Also, Loch Raven is having a ‘Swap Meet’ the same day as the All Clays Tournament. During the day on Saturday, October 10, 2015, you have the opportunity to bring whatever gear you wish to trade, sell or bargain away while the club carries on the scheduled shoot. The Harry Wright Pavilion will be used for that purpose. So again, plan ahead, bring those new, used, or previously enjoyed items you wish to swap and make a deal during the day’s events. Remember to mark your gear with the price you want and bargain from there using the picnic tables to display your wares.
