2016 PA SCTP Sporting Clays Championship

Awesome weather with beautiful surroundings was the theme of the weekend! This year’s third and final state championship took us to Buffer Creek Sporting Clays and the stunning backdrops of Somerset County.  Incidentally, if you are ever in Somerset make sure you stop by the Summit Diner. The Goober Burger and Lemon Meringue Pie are well worth the trip!

Saturday’s Main Event saw our squad of Dawson Sterner, Jake Lloyd, and first year shooter Noah Temple take home Second Place in the Junior Varsity division. Individual winners of the day included Preston Whiteman as Collegiate third, Dawson Sterner as Junior Varsity Champion, Ryanne Whiteman as Intermediate Entry Second Place Lady, and Stephanie Beardsley as First Place Collegiate Lady and High Over All Lady. Here is the link to all of the scores: http://shot.sssfonline.com/shot5/web/publish/results/frames.asp?cid=835&org=SCTP

I’m so proud of this year’s sporting clays division. Not everyone on the team was able to take home an award on Saturday, but the way the group pulled together and encouraged each other was amazing. The effort and dedication of our athletes and parents this year was commendable!!!

I would be remiss if I didn’t give credit where credit is due, this extraordinary year would not have been possible without the time and dedication of our amazing sporting clays coaches. All of our coaches are amazing; however, we need to send out a special thank you to Steve Beam, Mike Kelly, and Joe Clarkson for putting in countless hours and getting the team in tip-top shape. Thanks guys! I can’t put into words my personal gratitude I have for you three… you should be very proud of your accomplishments!!!

One other person who deserves a lot of credit for our continued Sporting Clays success is Anthony Matarese. Mason-Dixon has had multiple group training sessions with Anthony over the years and six of the seven awards won by our athletes this weekend were won by athletes who participated those training sessions. His teaching style and pinpoint instruction give us a solid base to follow and the confidence we need to compete with the best in the nation. Thanks Anthony… we’ll see you again soon!

Please join me in congratulating our athletes on their outstanding achievements!!!

Athletes and parents, please make plans to attend our Team Fun Shoot on June 22th at Jefferson Sportsmen. This is open to everyone on the team!

PA State SCTP & AIM Trap Championship Recap

What an incredible weekend!!! The targets were changeling, the food was delicious and the fellowship was fantastic.

First up was Saturday’s Pennsylvania SCTP Trap Championship. Our Junior Varsity squad of Jacob Lloyd, David Bell, Rachel Sauers, and Noah Temple finished in first place with a 461. Placing as individuals, Robbie Carpenter 2nd Place in the Rookie Division and David Bell placed 2nd in Junior Varsity with a 98.

Saturday’s breeze turned into 20+ MPH gusts for Sunday’s Pennsylvania AIM Trap Championship. Differing from the SCTP’s grade based grouping, the AIM program groups athletes by age. Our squads did very well in the extremely difficult conditions. Our Junior squad of Nathan Metzger, David Bell, Sam Rooney, Dan Riale, and Darin Wise took home second place in the Junior division breaking a Mason-Dixon weekend squad high 462 out of 500 targets. Sunday’s AIM event also saw one Clay Busters win an individual award. Stephanie Beardsley finished as the Junior Gold High Lady with a 90.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a few additional highlights of the weekend. Luke Beardsley shot a team weekend high 99 on Saturday and despite all that wind on Sunday, Darin Wise managed to break 95 targets. Matt Mills one of our first year shooters broke his first 25 Straight in Sunday’s AIM event. I’ll be looking for that hat at our Fun Shoot!!!!

All those ups and downs and all that hard work really does pay off and I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the efforts of our outstanding coaches. I would especially like to thank Jesse Smith, John Elmore, Steve Beam, and Bob Banchiere for all their help and support. Great job!

I would also like to take a second to thank our sponsors and partners for their commitment…. Look at what these athletes were able to accomplished with your support!!!

Athletes and parents, please make plans to attend our Team Fun Shoot on June 22th at Jefferson Sportsmen and don’t forget to block off our September 10th Dinner and Awards night on your calendars.

TRAP DIVISION

Full Trap division practices begin this Wednesday!!!!! Everyone needs to arrive by 6pm sharp. In addition to shooting there will be classroom time so please plan to stay until 8:30pm. If time allows we will try to play a game!

We have ammo to hand out. We have lots of 20 Gauge however the only shells we have in 12 Gauge is 1 1/8oz. If you like to shoot lighter shells make sure you bring some along.

I sent out an email earlier this week about a youth trap shoot on the 16th. Time is running out and I have not heard back from anyone. Please get back to ASAP to sign-up. Sounds like they have some really nice awards!

  • $25 for 100 16 yard targets. They will also be throwing Handicaps and Doubles if you’re interested.
  • Complementary Hat, T-shirt, and 2 boxes of ammo for every youth participant.

The high over all on anyone who shoots all three events will win a wood trophy that is 18 inches high 10 inches wide and is carved into the state of New Jersey. The medals and the trophies are coming from the Jim White collection.

TEAM (EVERYONE)

It’s the athlete’s responsibility to let us know when you’re running late or not able to attend a scheduled practice or competition.  Like I said at our team meeting, I’m expecting everyone to be at everything they signed up for, unless I hear otherwise! Our coaches are incredible people, they rearranged their schedules and developed training plans for you. Show your respect by letting them know when you cannot make it. Please take a second to look over the schedule and contact me if there are any dates you cannot make.

Don’t forget, athletes should always bring extra ammo with them to every practice, there are times you may need it.

It’s never too early to start planning for YOUR National Championship.  As in the past, it will be our goal to cover registration fees for this event.  If you have interest in attending Nationals please contact me to get your name on the list. Sponsors and Donations

As I’m sure you can understand, it takes a lot of resources to run a quality youth program like ours so Mason-Dixon is continually looking for additional partners and sponsors to help keep the costs down for our athletes and parents. The registration fees our athletes pay cover only a fraction of the true cost associated with participating in our program. Without the help we receive from our supporters many of the athletes in our program couldn’t afford to participate in the Shooting Sports.

That’s why I need your help! Over the years I have just about exhausted my list of potential sponsors and I’m hoping that some of you may be willing to help me find some new sponsors for the team.

While businesses that sell shooting supplies are a perfect fit, don’t limit yourself to those. A local business whose owner supports the shooting sports and/or youth activities might be an ideal candidate. The person who owns an auto parts store or hair salon might be an avid shooter or 2nd Amendment supporter who would be proud to be associated with a youth shooting team.

Every dollar we raise goes right back to the team and since we are a 501c3, donations to the team can be tax deductible.

Help me help our athletes! Contact me to get started and for valuable information I can provide you to help reach potential supporters. If everyone chips in and finds a sponsor or two it would make a huge difference in the ability of our program to meet the needs of our athletes.

If you are planning to attend the SCTP/SASP Nationals, please read!!!!

Hello all, I have had a few people asking me where we plan to stay for Nationals this year. Well with all the uncertainly hovering over where Nationals would be this year, I failed to book a “group” hotel…my apologies.  I realize part of the fun of Nationals is spending time together. It’s that way for me too!

Soooo… I thought the next best thing would be to put together a list of people who have said they are going, and where they plan to stay this year. Hopefully others interested in attending can use the list and maybe stay at some of the same places.

Below is what I have so far. If you would like to share where you are staying please shoot me an email and I add you to my list. If you plan to attend and you are not on my list, let me know what’s up and I’ll add your information.

DATE CORRECTION Spring Sporting Clays Clinic with Anthony Matarese…

Sorry about that, the date is….. Saturday, April 2, 2016

A date has been finalized for this year’s Sporting Clays Clinic with Anthony Matarese…

Our clinic will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at M&M Sporting Clays. If you don’t know Anthony, he is one of the top sporting clays shooters and instructors in the nation.  This is an incredible opportunity for both the experienced and intermediate shooters.

This will be a group lesson at Anthony’s range, M&M Sporting Clays, located in Pennsville, New Jersey. There will be 2 – three hour group lessons (AM/PM) and each session is limited to 6 shooters.

Anthony is a big fan of Mason-Dixon so he discounts the cost of his clinic and only charges us $95 per person.  In addition, due of the generosity of The Midway Foundation and Palmyra Sportsman Association, we are able to further discount the cost of this clinic by $50, making the finial cost $45 per athlete. That’s only $45 per person to be coached by one of the best instructors in the nation AND, get this; it includes up to 100 targets…WOW!!

Ammo and transportation to and from M&M are the responsibility of the shooters. This is not a drop off clinic, a parent or guardian must attend and maybe required to follow the participant around the course.  Note: Eye and ear protection is mandatory for everyone on the course.

This is a first-come, first-served opportunity so if you’re interested I need to respond ASAP.  In your response please indicate if AM (10am-1pm), PM (1pm-4pm), or Both times works for you. It would be great to have the flexibility to arrange the groups so that we can match like skill levels together.  If you need additional information or have any questions please feel free to give me a call.

Hello Mason-Dixon Athletes

Hello Mason-Dixon Athletes, we would like to welcome everyone to what will be a fun and exciting year!!! Listed below is some important information you will need to know.

Team Meeting:
We are less than a month away from our kick off Team Meeting on March 16th. This meeting is mandatory for all members and parents. We will be presenting important program information along with volunteer needs and our competition schedule.

Parent participation required:
This is not intended to be a drop off program. A parent or responsible adult is required to be present for any member under 18. If you have an occasion where you have something you must do, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for another parent/adult to take responsibility for your child.

Email and Website:
As I hope you can appreciate, communicating with a group this size is not easy so making phone calls to relay information is just not possible. All of our information will be sent to you via email. Please read what you get and reply as soon as possible when asked. Our website contains lots of valuable information including copies of most of the emails that are sent out. It also contains an up-to-date schedule of events. This will be your go to place for event dates, times, and locations.

Cancellation due to weather:
We rarely cancel due to weather, but when we do it is a last minute decision. The past few years we have been using a service that goes by the name Remind to send out important notifications and last minute communications to our members. Remind is a free, safe, easy-to-use communication tool that helps us connect instantly with participants and parents. To receive messages via text, text @mdcb to (412) 927-1441. Or to receive messages via email, send an email to mdcb@mail.remind.com.

Use of personal firearms:
If you own a Firearm that you would like to use (pending safety inspection) you are welcome to bring it along. If you need a loaner gun please contact us at coach@masondixonclaybusters.com and make arrangements.

Ammunition:
Those in the shotgun disciplines it is your responsibility to bring two or three boxes of ammo with you to every practice. That said we have some ammo we will be handing out. Unfortunately most of the 12 gauge shotgun ammo we have is some pretty high power stuff (1 1/8 oz. #8 shot). If you are a new shooter or sensitive to recoil you may want to make sure you bring along something a little lighter such as 1 oz loads. We recommend the following:

  • Trap & Sporting Clays
    • 12 gauge
      • #8 shot
      • #7.5 shot
    • 20 gauge
      • #8 shot
      • #7.5 shot
    • Skeet
      • 12 gauge
        • #9 shot
        • #8 shot
      • 20 gauge
        • 7/8oz. #9 shot
        • 7/8oz. #8 shot

Those in the pistol discipline, your ammo will be provided. However, if you have your own firearm and it is a little finicky with its ammo you may want to bring what works for your gun.

If you have questions about ammo please ask your coaches.

Clothing & Safety Equipment:
Make sure you wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for outside weather. In cooler weather layers work best. Jeans, shorts, sweatshirts, tee shirts are all fine. Shotgun shooters avoid wearing hoodies or bulky jackets with big collars as they tend to bunch up around the shoulders making proper gun mount difficult. Make sure you wear sturdy closed toe shoes. Sandals or open toe shoes will NOT be permitted on the firing line. Although not required, I highly encourage everyone to wear a hat.

Eye and ear protection must be worn by ALL STUDENTS while live fire is in progress. If you have eye and ear protection, please bring it with you. Spectators are also encouraged to use eye and ear protection.

Help Needed:
Support from our parents is the backbone of this program. We will be forming committees so that the burden of these jobs will not fall on any one person. Many hands make light work. Please consider where you can pitch in and come to the team meeting in March prepared to sign up. If prior to the meeting you have any questions or need additional details just let me know.
