Mason-Dixon Clay Busters Fall News Letter

Important information please read thoroughly

Fall Fun Trap League

Three weeks down… four to go! The Fall Fun Trap League is going strong but there is still time for you to jump in and join the fun. The Sub-Juniors are putting up some big numbers however there are still lots of Weekly and End-of-League awards up for grabs!

ACUI’s Upper East Coast Conference Championships

A few of you are in (Thank you very much ) however we still need a couple more High-school Juniors and Seniors to commit so we can shoot the ACUI’s Upper East Coast Conference Championships at Prince George’s County Trap and Skeet Center on November Nov. 8–9, 2014.
This would be a great opportunity for our High-school Juniors and Seniors to score some really nice awards. Ladies, we could really benefit from your participation!

Early SCTP Registration (New members welcome)

As many of you know, the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is Mason-Dixon’s primary umbrella organization. Basically the SCTP provides us with insurance coverage and an avenue to compete in state and national competitions. The 2014-15 SCTP season started on September 1, 2014 so because we have a few fall events this year we think it would be best to open up the SCTP portion of our team registration early this year. This early SCTP registration would insure that everyone who participates in our team sponsored events this fall are covered by the SCTP’s insurance umbrella.

With that, our plan is to collect the $20 SCTP membership fee, starting today, from anyone who would like to participate in any of our fall events or just looking to lock in their spot on the team for 2015. Once we confirm all of our 2015 practice/competition dates and get all of our costs together, we will send out our 2015 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters team registration in November as we have in the past. Anyone who pays the early SCTP registration will lock in their spot on next year’s team and will be able to deduct $20 from their 2015 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters registration costs.

Click here to download the 2014-15 SCTP Registration Package. Fill it out and return it with a check for $20 made out to: Mason-Dixon Clay Busters, 213 Pine Street, Glen Rock PA 17327. If you have any questions please give me a call (717-235-0743) and I would be glad to walk you through the process.

Skeet League

York – Adams Game and Fish Association has invited Mason-Dixon members to participate in their upcoming Fall and Winter Skeet Leagues. This is an Additional Opportunity and not a team sponsored event. Participants need to be familiar with the game of Skeet and able to participate without the assistance of a coach. Coaches Needed

OUR KIDS NEED YOUR SUPPORT …PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A COACH!!!!
As you may have noticed interest in the team is growing and in order for us to keep up with this growth we need to be able to find new coaches and retain the great coaches that we have. Last year we had 12 people go through the NRA Coaches Training Program and become team coaches and that was a HUGE benefit to the program. Our goal is to do the same thing in 2015 and find and train a bunch of new coaches. If you, or anyone you know would like to become a team coach we would love to hear from you. As we did last season, we will once again pay for all training and coaches registration fees. Please contact me at coach@masondixonclaybusters.com for more information.

Gun Raffle

Most of you know how I feel about conducting fundraisers during the season however this one is just too good for us to pass up. MidwayUSA is sending us a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade .280 REM for us to raffle off next year. This gun is beautiful and would make a nice addition to anyone’s firearm collection. The money we make from raffling off this gun will go toward cutting the costs of our program. Stay tuned for more information on this and how you can help coming out in the next few weeks!

2015 SCTP Nationals (July 13-18, 2014)

Add these dates to your calendar because it’s never too early to start planning for your National Championship. I just sent in a deposit to lock us for 10 rooms at the Holiday Inn Express Sparta. This hotel is just 6 minutes from the World Shooting Complex so this is a HUGE win for the team. For those of you who are not familiar with the area, last year the closest hotel we could find was located 45 minutes from the Complex. As with the gun raffle, look for more information on this in the coming weeks.

PA State Skeet Championship

Would anyone be interested in putting together a squad for the PA State Skeet Championship at Shenecoy Sportsmen Club on August 23. Cost is 1/2 the normal entry fee so the cost to each junior would be around $23.  Also they have been able to secure some ammo from the NRA but you MUST be signed up PRIOR to the start of the shoot.  Again-the ammo is only for juniors that PRE REGISTER. If you are interested in attending get back to me by August 2nd.

SCTP Nationals Recap…2013-14 season comes to an end

What an amazing week!!! The weather was perfect, the targets were awesome, and the fellowship was fantastic. I was very proud of our athletes. We posted some great scores, met some new friends, and took home a few awards. If you would like to see how everyone did all the scores can be found on the SCTP’s website at http://live.sssf.avatarsyn.com/shotv5/web/publish/2014/index.asp

I would like to thank all the athletes and their families who attended. I didn’t have an opportunity to talk with everyone before they left so if you have any comments or ideas on how we can improve things next year please feel free to pass them along.

Mark your calendars… the dates for next years SCTP National Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays Team Championships are tentatively scheduled for July 13-18, 2015  Don’t get left out, let’s start planning for next year!!!

As our 2013-14 season comes to an end, I would like to thank all of our athletes for the privilege to be your coach. I am blessed to have such a great group of athletes. I would also like to thank everyone out there who helped make this season a resounding success. Parents, coaches, sponsors…

It’s hard for me to believe that this was our 8th season as a competitive team. We will miss those of you who are moving on to new adventures and we look forward to working with those who are just beginning!

Fall Junior Trap League

In an effort to keep everyone shooting this fall, I’m trying to see if there would be any interest in having a 7 week (50 Target) Junior Trap League at Glen Rock this Fall. The league would run on Thursdays evenings starting September 4th and continue through October 16th. Cost would be somewhere around $9 per week and would include targets, weekly awards, and end of league awards. Participants will be responsible for providing their own ammunition and firearm.

Please click on the link below and let me know if you would be interested in participating. Even if you’re not interested or unsure, please click on the link and let me know “Yes, No or Maybe”.

If we have enough interest (10+), I’ll set everything up with Glen Rock and send out the details.

SCTP Sporting Clays & MD AIM Recap

Sorry for the delay in getting this out. This past Saturday (6/14/14) Mason-Dixon traveled northeast to the Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club to participate in the PA SCTP Sporting Clays Championship. The weather could have been a little warmer however I thought the club did an excellent job putting on the event. I don’t know, maybe I was really hungry but I thought that BBQ’ed chicken was outstanding!!!

Anyway, 220 youth athletes form across the state participated in the event. The course included a lot of difficult crossers that our team really seemed to struggle with however I thought overall we did well and even placed two of our individual shooters on the podium. Mark tied for first in the Junior Category and using longest run as a tie breaker took home the 2nd Place Junior trophy. Stephanie also took home an award placing 2nd also in the Ladies category.

Here is a link to all the scores… [download id=”90″]

As I said, when you take into consideration the difficult targets and how young the core of our team really is, I was very pleased with our performance. If nothing else we know where our week points are and that we need to work harder on our crossers for next year’s SCTP Sporting Clays Championship. Speaking of next year’s championship, I’m very please to inform you that the Blue Ridge Sportsman Club has been selected to host next year’s championship. Don’t worry, I’m already working Blue Ridge into next year’s practice schedule. Being that Blue Ridge is in our own back yard, it should really cut down on next year’s travel expenses…and that’s good news for everyone.

In other news, Mason-Dixon sent two squads to the Maryland AIM Trap Championship this past weekend. I don’t have all the results however I have heard that despite some very windy conditions, many of our athletes walked away with awards. And I’m very please to say for the second year in a row a Clay Buster took home the Shamrock Leather Bag. Eric Inch stepped it up and shot a 25 straight in the shootoff to win the bag… Great job Eric!!!! I’ll post the final results of the Maryland AIM Trap Championship as soon as I receive them.

Next up for some of you is Saturday’s PA SCTP Skeet Championship, the rest of you keep practicing, the Fun Shoot is Wednesday and you never know what we will be playing!!!! See you then!

Weekend’s SCTP AIM recap!

What an incredible weekend!!! The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and the fellowship was rewarding. Oh yea I almost forgot, there was a Trap Championship this weekend!

First up was Saturday’s PA SCTP Team Championship. Our Intermediate Entry squad of Jacob, Brody, Brandon, Clair, and Dawson finished in second place with a 375. Also taking second place in their division with a 432 was the Intermediate Advanced squad of Dan, Darin, Nathan, Adam, and David. Also placing was our College squad of Brandon, Stephanie, Bridget, Brain, and Dalton.

Light winds and beautiful skies opened Sunday’s PA AIM Championship. The AIM competition differs from the SCTP as it includes both team and individual awards. Our squads did very well placing 2 squads in this very completive AIM event. The Sub-Junior squad of Dan, Darin, Nathan, Sam, and Dawson took home first place while our Senior squad of Luke, Stephanie, Spencer, Brian, and Dalton finished in second place breaking a Mason-Dixon team weekend high 474 out of 500 targets.  The 474 was also good enough to capture the runner-up spot in the High Over All category and win the team $1750 that will be placed in our Midway Foundation endowment account!!!

Sunday’s AIM event also saw four Clay Busters win individual awards. Dan Riale won fifth place in the Sub-Junior event. Stephanie and Dalton brought home third and first respectively in the Senior division and Dawson finished in the top spot in the Pre-Sub category.

All those ups and downs and all that hard work really does pay off and I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the efforts of our outstanding coaches. I would especially like to thank Jesse Smith, John Elmore, and Steve Beam for all their help and support. Great job gentlemen…. Look what your athletes accomplished!!

While some of you move on to Sporting Clays this weekend, others will set their sights on Maryland’s AIM Trap Championship at Harvey Cedar Gun Club.

Please make plans to attend our Team Awards and fun shoot on June 25th at Jefferson Sportsmen. Also remember to send me a “Yes or No” regarding the SCTP Nationals in July. Visit http://doodle.com/5egbymdh8cn5zrec to make your choice.

PA SCTP and AIM squads and event information

Everything is set for our big Trap weekend. To help answer some questions I put together a State Shoot Information Package that you can download form our website [download id=”87″] Included in the package are the squad assignments, range map, competition checklist, and Knoebels picnic map. Also, please see Shannon (shayes@aandsservicesgroup.com) to see what you can bring or where you can help with our Knoebels picnic.

Couple of things for this weekend….

I could still use a few more volunteers to help at Saturday’s (5/31) Youth Field Day. Email me if you can attend and I will send you the details.

Coach Dave is going to Blue Ridge on Saturday (5/31) at 10am to shoot sporting clays and would welcome anyone to come and shoot with him. This would be a great opportunity to get a little extra practice in with a great coach. Target fees and ammo are the responsibility of the shooters. If you would like to attend you must contact Coach Dave at dvsimmons@comcast.net no later than 8:00am on Saturday.

Glen Rock is hosting an ATA Trap shoot this Sunday (6/1) and everyone is welcome!! The weather looks great so if you have some time head on over and shoot some targets. Again, target fees and ammo are the responsibility of the shooters.

That’s it, have a great weekend…..

I’m looking for volunteers to help Mason-Dixon work the trap station at the Youth Field Day put on by the York Area Sportsmen for Youth. This year’s Youth Field Day will be held on May 31st at Izaak Walton League York Chapter.

Below are some details about the day:

  • We need help teaching/coaching approximately 200 beginners how to break clays. Most of these kids have never shot a shotgun before.
  • It takes approximately 10-15 people to work this all day event.
  • The kids are split up into 10 groups of 20 kids, and they range in age from 8 to 16.
  • We only have 40 mins for each group of 20 kids, so in order to keep pace I need 5 coaches and one puller for each of the 10 groups.

I really need help so if you would like to sign-up please contact to me ASAP.

PEN-MAR Regional Youth Trap Shoot – UPDATE

Hello All, I have a few things to go over with you pertaining to the PEN-MAR Regional Youth Trap Shoot on Sunday (5/18) at Glen Rock.

  • This is a 100 target trap shoot and ammo will NOT be provided by the team. Participants will need to bring at least 150 rounds of ammo with them to the shoot. You never know, you may be in a shoot off and you’ll need an extra box. Also, we will be planning “Last Competitor Standing” for a leather bag at the end of the day so you’ll need extra ammo for that.
  • The practice trap will open at 9am. It will be first come first served and I expect it will be very busy. Cost is $4/25 targets. Make sure you bring additional ammo if you plan to shoot a practice round.
  • Please make sure you wear your team shirt to the competition.
  • Parking is going to be limited, please carpool if possible.
  • We will be shooting 50 targets per trap. For those that have not done that before it’s not a big deal. You just shoot two rounds of 25 targets at your first house then you move to your second house and complete your last two rounds of 25.
  • Awards will be handed out after all shooting is complete. If everything goes as planned that will be around 5pm. Please plan to attend the awards so you can show your support to all of the winners.
  • Some things you should consider bringing to the shoot; Gun (back-up gun if you have one), Ammo (extra for practice and shoot offs), Ear Protection, Shooting Glasses (extra if you have them), Lenses Cleaner and Clean Cloth, Shooting Vest or Shell Pouch, Two Extra Shells for your Vest or Pouch, Hat or Visor, Shooting Towel, Shell Catcher, Barrel Rest Pad, Tools, Cleaning Supplies and Extra Gun Parts, Gun oil or lube, Bag to hold empty shells, Sun Screen, Bug Spray, Bottled Water and Sport Drinks, Energy Bars or Healthy Snacks, Rain gear, Bandages and Band Aids, Folding Chairs for Spectators and Shooters.
  • Your squad number, required arrival time, and estimated start time, is listed below. Please make sure you arrive on time, your squad mates are depending on you.
