FALL 2015 ePostal Youth Trap and/or Skeet League

In an effort to have a little fun and provide additional competitive trap and skeet shooting opportunities to area youth, the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters, Inc. has formed an ePostal Youth Trap and/or Skeet League. To make things exciting, participants can chose to shoot either Trap or Skeet, or both Trap and Skeet! The league runs for a total of 8 weeks. League participants will shoot and submit scores for two (2) rounds of Trap and/or two (2) rounds Skeet per week. Rounds may be shot at any time during the week and at any standard range. Scores will be compiled and tabulated weekly and winners will be announced at the end of the league.

Fill out the ePostal Youth Trap and/or Skeet League
Interest Form Today!!!!

We are holding this league in lieu of our Fall Fun Tarp League. It’s essentially the same thing as last year’s fun league except athletes can also shoot Skeet and rounds can be shot at anytime during the week, at any range. We have also added a handicap category to make things a little more interesting. This league is meant for athletes to participate on their own, on their own time, and there will not be any Mason-Dixon volunteers coaching or helping the athletes in any way. In addition, participation in the league does not meet the criteria of a team event/practice so SCTP and AIM insurance coverage would not apply.

Invite a Friend, have some fun, we would love to see some new shooters join us!!!!! Marcia and I plan to be a Glen Rock on Thursday evenings to help score, witness and collect score sheets. Come join us we would love to see you.

If you are interested in participating in the ePostal League visit the link below and fill out the Interest Form. The league is scheduled to start on August 29 so don’t delay.

Additional information regarding the SCTP Mid Atlantic Regional Trap Tournament on Saturday (8/1/15) at West Chester Gun Club

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! It looks like we will be able to field three full squads plus! I have put together some information for you to review. Marcia and I will not be at the shoot but you will have some very capable helpers to run the day. Dale Wise will act as head coach and Alma Rooney will be helping on the administration end.

  • SCTP Mid Atlantic Regional Trap Tournament – Saturday, August 1, 2015
    • CHECK-IN BEGINS AT 9:00AM
    • PRACTICE TRAP OPEN AT 9:00AM
    • SHOOTING BEGINS AT 10:00AM
    • 100 16 YARD TRAP TARGETS
    • HOSTED BY: West Chester Gun Club
  • The shoot starts at 10am so I need everyone at the range no later than 9:15am. Google says it takes about 1.5 hours to get there from York so please plan accordingly.
  • Ms Alma will have the sign-in sheet. Find her and SIGN IN AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE.
  • Please make sure you wear or bring your team shirt to the competition.
  • Please make sure your guns are clean and in good working order.
  • The registration fees for this shoot are $36 however our fantastic sponsors will be covering our fees.
  • Ammo will NOT be provided by the team. Participants will need to bring at least 125 rounds of ammo with them to the shoot. You never know, you may be in a shoot off and you will need an extra box
  • Some things you should consider bringing to the shoot; Gun (back-up gun if you have one), Ammo (extra for practice and shoot offs), Ear Protection, Shooting Glasses (extra if you have them), Lenses Cleaner and Clean Cloth, Shooting Vest or Shell Pouch, Two Extra Shells for your Vest or Pouch, Hat or Visor, Shooting Towel, Shell Catcher, Barrel Rest Pad, Tools, Cleaning Supplies and Extra Gun Parts, Gun oil or lube, Bag to hold empty shells, Sun Screen, Bug Spray, Bottled Water and Sport Drinks, Energy Bars or Healthy Snacks, Rain Gear, Bandages and Band Aids, Folding Chairs for Spectators and Shooters.
  • Don’t forget, it gets hot, and when it does athletes need a place to get out of the sun. I encourage you to bring chairs and canopies along with you.
  • The practice trap will open at 9am. It will be first come first served and I expect it will be very busy. Make sure you bring additional ammo if you plan to shoot a practice round.
  • Food will be available to purchase onsite. There are other eating options in the area as well. West Chester will provide cold bottled water.
  • We will be shooting 50 targets per trap. For those that have not done that before it’s not a big deal. You just shoot two rounds of 25 targets at your first house then you move to your second house and complete your last two rounds of 25.
  • Keep things moving please be mindful of the time shooters take between rounds.
  • Awards will be handed out after all shooting is complete. Please plan to attend the awards so you can show your support to all of the winners.

A couple of very important things….

First…Please make sure you wear or bring your team shirts. It’s fine with me if you don’t want to shoot in it but please bring it along for awards and photos.

Second… ties for this shoot will be settled by shoot off so please bring a little extra ammo and PLEASE plan to stay until the end and the awards ceremony. I’m not sure how long the day will run but if you are unable to stay please let me know now and I’ll make adjustments to the squads.

Marcia and I are out of town all week so I will not be able to setup a practice however if you want to go on your own Loch Raven is open on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Izaak Walton is open on Monday. And Glen Rock and Jefferson are open on Thursday.

That’s all I can think of. Below is the address to the club and our squads for the day. If you have any questions please feel free to get back to me.

Mason-Dixon places at Nationals!!!!!

What a night for the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters, our first ever National Squad awards!!!!!!!

First to find the podium was our Skeet division squad of Jeremy Adkins, Tori Mann, and Dawson Sterner.  The squad posted a 546, good enough to take home fifth place in the Open Division. Our second squad of  Jacob Lloyd, Sam Rooney, and Adam Simmons shot a solid 473 to place 19th out of  37 teams in their division.

Next up on the podium, placing fifth in the Open Division with a 491, was our Sporting Clay squad of Jeremy Adkins, Sam Rooney, and Dawson Sterner. Our Junior Varsity squad of Jacob Lloyd, Tori Mann, and Adam Simmons shot a 435 to place 24th out of 32 teams in the JV Division.

In individual awards, Tori Mann took home 1st place earning her the title, 2015 SCTP Junior Varsity American Skeet Champion! And in Sporing Clays Tori placed 5th with a very nice 162.

Next up for the team is Trap.

I would like to congratulate all of these fine young athletes. Hard work and commitment truly pays of!!!!!

2015 PA SCTP Skeet Championship Recap

The rain came down in buckets Saturday but that didn’t stop the Mason-Dixon athletes from continuing their winning ways! Thirteen Clay Busters hit the Skeet fields for our third and final state championships of the year in what I can only describe as the worst shooting conditions I have ever witnessed for a competition. At the end of a very wet day, two Mason-Dixon squads took home awards along with five Mason-Dixon individuals. I’m so proud of everyone who competed Saturday, those were the type of conditions that really test your resolve.

A special heartfelt thank you goes out to the parents and coaches who braved those horrible conditions in support of our athletes. Mason-Dixon is blessed with an outstanding backbone of adult support and it was awesome to see how much it strengthened over the last few weeks.

2015 PA State SCTP Sporting Clays Championship Results

The rain held off for the shooters on the course, the targets were challenging but breakable, and the food…well two out of three ain’t bad..lol. Seriously, Saturday was a historic day for the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters and it’s athletes. It was the first time we have ever placed as a squad in an SCTP sporting clays event. Mason-Dixon outright won the JV division and then tied for first in the Varsity division, eventually taking home second place after a shoot-off. These are biggest and most tightly contested divisions. This is an awesome way to end a season!!!

I’m so proud of this year’s sporting clays division. Not everyone on the team won awards on Saturday but the way the group pulled together and encouraged each other was amazing. The effort and dedication by our athletes and parents was commendable!!! If you were one of the fortunate ones who took home an award, congratulations! If not don’t be discouraged, with hard work and commitment you too will persevere.

Let’s not forget that this historic year would not have been possible without the time and dedication of our amazing sporting clays coaches. All of our coaches were exceptional this year but we need to send out a special thank you to Steve Beam, Mike Kelly, and Joe Clarkson for putting in countless hours and getting the team in tip-top shape. Thanks guys I can’t put into words my personal gratitude I have for you three… you should be very proud of your accomplishments!!!

One other person who deserves a lot of credit for our Sporting Clays success this year is Anthony Matarese. For those who may not know, Mason-Dixon had two group training sessions with Anthony this year and eight of the nine Mason-Dixon athletes who won awards this weekend participated in one, if not both, of those training sessions. His teaching style and pinpoint instruction gave us a solid base to follow and the confidence we had been lacking in previous years. Thanks Anthony… we’ll see you soon with our next group of champions!

Below is a list of our athletes who placed on Saturday, please join me in congratulating them on their outstanding achievements!!!

  • 1st Place Senior/Jr. Varsity Squad – 229

Weekend’s SCTP AIM Trap Championship recap…

What an incredible weekend!!! The targets were perfect, the food was delicious and the fellowship was wonderful.

First up was Saturday’s PA SCTP Team Championship. Our Intermediate Entry squad of Nathan T, Rachel, Travis, Brayden, and Garrett finished in third place with a 338. Also taking third place in their division with a 416 was the Intermediate Advanced squad of Jacob, Brandon, David, Brody, and Dawson. Placing as individuals, Robbie 3rd Place in the Rookie Division and Mark and Stephanie placed 2nd and 3rd in the Collegiate Division.

Light rain giving way to beautiful skies opened Sunday’s PA AIM Championship. The AIM competition differs from the SCTP as it includes both team and individual awards. Our squads did very well placing 2 squads in this very completive AIM event. Our Sub-Junior squad of Dan, Nathan M, David, Clair, and Dawson took home second place while our Junior Gold squad of Mark, Stephanie, Eric, Ryan , and Luke finished in first place breaking a Mason-Dixon team weekend high 481 out of 500 targets.

Sunday’s AIM event also saw four Clay Busters win individual awards. Nathan M won 4th place with a 98 in a very competitive Sub-Junior division. Eric and Mark brought home 2nd and 3rd respectively with 99 in the Junior Gold division and Stephanie finished as the Junior Gold High Lady with a 95.

All those ups and downs and all that hard work really does pay off and I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the efforts of our outstanding coaches. I would especially like to thank Jesse Smith, John Elmore, and Steve Beam for all their help and support. Great job…. Look what these athletes accomplished!!

Athletes and parents, please make plans to attend our Team Awards and fun shoot on June 24th at Jefferson Sportsmen.

Help Needed – Youth Field Day – May 30, 2015

Mason-Dixon is running the Shotgun Station this Saturday at Izaak Walton’s Youth Field Day and we really need your help. It’s a fun day but it’s a long day so we need a bunch of people to pitch in and help.

For those not familiar with the Youth Field Day and what we do there, it goes like this…. They take approximately 200 young people and break them into groups of 20 or so. The groups then travel around and learn different things about the outdoors at nine stations. One of the stations is the Shotgun station where I teach them a little basic gun safety and then we let them take a few shot (6-8) at some clay targets.

We have a coach at each station to help the kids. The coach controls the ammo, helps them load the gun, and basically makes sure they are safe and pointed down range. It’s a lot of fun but it’s a long day if we only have a few people.

I know we went around and asked a lot of you but I need to know for sure who is going to help so I can put together a schedule. Marica, Mark and I will be there all day. As I remember it starts around 7:30am and ends around 4-5pm.

Please reply to this email if you can help and let me know the times you are available. Once I hear back from everyone I will draft up a schedule.

Izaak Walton is very good to Mason-Dixon and this is something that we can do to help the club!

Thanks for your support!!!!

PEN-MAR Regional Youth Trap Shoot on May 17, 2015 at Glen Rock

Additional information regarding the PEN-MAR Regional Youth Trap Shoot on Sunday (5/17) at Glen Rock

  • PEN-MAR Regional Youth Trap Shoot – SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2015
  • Come in the clubhouse and SIGN IN AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE.
  • Please make sure you wear your team shirt to the competition.
  • Please make sure your guns are clean and in good working order.
  • Ammo will NOT be provided by the team. Participants will need to bring at least 150 rounds of ammo with them to the shoot. You never know, you may be in a shoot off and you need an extra box. Also, we will be having a “Last Competitor Standing” for a leather bag at the end of the day so you’ll need extra ammo for that.
  • There will be limited seating so please encourage your families to bring chairs along with them.
  • The practice trap will open at 9am. It will be first come first served and I expect it will be very busy. Cost is $4/25 targets. Make sure you bring additional ammo if you plan to shoot a practice round.
  • Parking is going to be limited, please carpool if possible.
  • Food will be available to purchase onsite.
  • We will be holding a 50/50 raffle at the shoot to try and offset some of the cost of the nice awards we are giving away at the shoot. Please let your families know and encourage them to participate.
  • We will be shooting 50 targets per trap. For those that have not done that before it’s not a big deal. You just shoot two rounds of 25 targets at your first house then you move to your second house and complete your last two rounds of 25.
  • We have a full house so to keep things moving please be mindful of the time shooters take between rounds.
  • Awards will be handed out after all shooting is complete. If everything goes as planned that will be around 5pm. Please plan to attend the awards so you can show your support to all of the winners.
  • Your squad number, required arrival time, and estimated start time, is listed below. Please make sure you arrive on time, your squad mates are be depending on you.
  • This is meant to be fun for the kids, the parents, & everyone involved. Let’s all try and remember that. Good sportsmanship is a MUST!

First (and Last) Call for Nationals!!!!

Registration for the 2015 SCTP Nationals in Sparta Illinois on July 13-18 opens up on June 1st so I need to know who is in and who is out. I will need time to put my squads together so I MUST know if you are going by May 29th. This date is firm…no exceptions.

Nationals are open to everyone on our team!!! This is not a win at all cost high pressure competition for us. We go to Nationals for enjoyment as it’s a great experience and a lot of fun. Don’t get me wrong, we have an outstanding team this year and I think we will do very well. We will practice and prepare ourselves to do our best, but if we fall a little short, it’s ok!! There is a lot of value in participating in an event like this.

If it helps sway you, registrations fees (and hopefully ammo) will be covered by our benefactors.

As far as the schedule…It will depend on what slots are open but the “PLAN” is to shoot Skeet on July 13-14 (Monday-Tuesday), Sporting on July 15-16 (Wednesday – Thursday), and Trap on July 17-18 (Friday – Saturday). It’s not a requirement that you shoot everything!!!! You participate only in the disciplines you want.

The only way to get on the list is to see Marcia at one of our upcoming practices or competitions. Emails and phone calls will not be accepted. May 29th is only a little more than 2 weeks away so we don’t have a lot of time to get this done.
