Siblings Bring Home Gold and Bronze at the 2012 Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Trap Championships
(May 9, 2012 – Dalmatia) – Brothers Luke and Mark Beardsley of Glen Rock, along with four teammates of the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters, traveled to Dalmatia, Pennsylvania to attend the Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Trap Championships at the Keystone Shooting Park, on May 5-6.
Luke won top honors breaking 101 out of 125 targets while Mark brought home the Bronze Metal. Brandi Hobbs of Edinboro took home Silver.
The top three shooters not only win medals but also qualify to attend the National Junior Olympic Championships in Colorado Springs on July 10-17. Shooters that qualify at this event can then attempt to qualify for a spot on the national Olympic team.
“It was great to win here at Keystone and to share the podium with my brother was special” said Luke. “we hope to do well in Colorado Springs”
The Pennsylvania SCTP Olympic Trap Team Championship was held concurrently with the Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Trap Championships with squads from Mason-Dixon placing in two classes. Luke Beardsley, Evan Filepas and Stephanie Beardsley won Silver in the “A” Class while Mark Beardsley, James Dalton and Dan Cook took home the Gold Medal in “B” Class.

Yes, scores will be tallied and awards will be presented to the top squads but this is going be a very low key, low pressure event, suitable for everyone – even our first year team members.
Our returning team members should already know how these events work, but for all of our first year participants the day will go something like this.
Based on the number of participants Mason-Dixon has attending, I will group shooters with similar abilities into squads of 5. Participants will be shooting in these squad for the entire day.
The morning of the shoot we will meet at the range at 8:30AM. DON’T BE LATE! We begin shooting at 9AM Make sure you have eaten a good healthy breakfast. The first thing you’ll need to do when you arrive is find Mrs. Marcia and sign-in! I need to know who is at the range and the best way for me to do that is for me to check the sign-in sheet. If you forget to sign-in you may miss your opportunity to participate.
When you’re done signing-in you will need to get your gear together. Below is a list of what you’ll need and what you are responsible for bringing with you to the shoot.
- Gun (if you’re using a club gun you’ll need to let me know so I can bring it)
- Range Bag
- Ear protection
- Eye protection
- Shooting vest or pouch
- 5 boxes of ammunition (125 shells)
- Chokes and Choke tool (if gun is equipped with changeable chokes)
- Towel
- Ball cap
- Sun screen
- Water bottle
- Extra parts
- Gun oil or lube
- Multi-use tool
- Rag
- Folding Chair
- Healthy Snacks (lunch will be available to purchase)
Each squad will be assigned a number. This number will determine your approximate start time in addition to your starting trap house. Depending on the shoot, you will either shoot 25 or 50 targets at each trap house. When you have finished with a trap house you will need to move to the next, until you have completed the round (100 targets).
When you have finished your round you should wipe down you gun and put away all your equipment. After taking care of your gear you should try to find any teammate who are still shooting and support them. When everyone is done shooting we will gather as a group for the awards.
It is very important that you support your teammates and stay for the awards. When the awards are complete make sure to congratulate the winners but don’t forget to let everyone know what a good job they did.
Lastly, I just want to make it very clear…. This will be a low key and low pressure event. Coaches will be there with you if you need help. Yes, this is a competition, and yes there will be awards, however, this is a learning experience and an opportunity for you to see what our competitions are like and what you can expect as our season moves forward.
I’ve tried to spell things out as best I could but if you still have questions just let me know.

Start of the 2012 season is only a few days away!
Hello Shooters, I know it’s hard to believe but we are only a few days away from our first official team event. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend our team Orientation at Jefferson Sportsmen on March 28th at 6pm. This is a mandatory meeting as we will be going over all the new SCTP and AIM information in addition to our schedule and other must know information for our 2012 shooting season. This will be your opportunity to ask questions and get to know the rest of the team. Make sure you bring any firearms that you plan on using this year along with you for a safety check. I would also like to ask anyone willing, to please bring along a snack or drink to share with the group.
There are over 40 young people shooting on the team this year so we are going to need some help in order for things run smooth. To start you thinking, below are a few areas that we really need help with. All I ask is that you please keep an open mind and let me know if there are any areas where you feel you may be able to help. Don’t worry most jobs are not difficult and we will teach you everything you’ll need to know.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone on the 28th,
Coach Roger

Anyone up for a up a little pre-practice practice, we (Luke, Steph and Mark) are going up to Blue Ridge this Saturday, March 10th, at 10:00AM to shoot some Sporting Clays and we were looking to see if anyone else would like to join us. Blue Ridge will let the team shoot 100 targets at a reduced rate, BYOG&A (Bring You Own Gun & Ammo). We may be able to take along a few beginners however you must contact me to make arrangements.
This is a great deal and an opportunity to shoot some quality targets. Get back to me ASAP if you’re interested.
California Range Day Draws Hundreds of New Shooters

Imagine if your shooting club organized a public range day and 1500 people attended (including hundreds of first-time shooters). Now imagine that taking place in “gun-phobic” California. Well, believe it or not, this really happened when the San Luis Obispo Sportsmen’s Association (SLOSA) hosted its first annual SLOSA Expo. The January event drew more than 1,500 attendees who shot nearly 40,000 rounds while trying out a variety of shooting….
Registrations and Schedules
FYI…registrations have been flying in so I wanted to provide everyone with an update on where we stand. As of today (1/23/12), I have received commitments from 33 shooters for the 2012 season. Of those 33 Shooters, 27 have sent in their paperwork and payment. The remaining 6 are in the process of sending their information in.
Below is the list as it currently stands. If you are on the list and no longer want to shoot with Mason-Dixon please let me know. If you are not on the list and you think you should be, contact me ASAP.
In other news, our practice and competition schedule is just about complete. I still need to add a few dates here and there but for the most part the information listed on the website looks solid. FYI…THERE WILL BE CHANGES TO THIS SCHEDULE…THERE ALWAYS ARE. To make sure you keep up with the latest dates, times and locations, refer back to the website often! The information listed on the website is for your benefit, please make sure you use it.

Just in from the SCTP…College Division approved for awards!
ADDENDUM #13E, add the following clarification:
College Division is a separate Category and awards will be provided at State SCTP Championships. If an individual college student’s school does not have a college shooting program, they may participate with a current or their past SCTP School Team as a “Collegiate” on the Team Roster. College squads must consist of individuals from the same college. No “bump ups” allowed from a lower Division/Category, i.e. Senior Varsity, etc. Where there are no College squads, there will be Collegiate Individual awards provided.

2012 Mason-Dixon Clay Buster Registration
Dear All,
Wow, the year has flown by! The reason for my email is twofold. One is to keep everyone in the loop as to the latest team news and information regarding Mason-Dixon and second, is to announce the beginning of our SCTP registration period for the 2012 season.
Team News:
Mason-Dixon had a fantastic 2011 and we are looking forward to building on those successes in 2012. This offseason has been a very busy one. I have applied for two Friends of NRA grants. One is for practice ammunition and targets to help keep our overall expenses down, and the second would provide funding for us to attend our state competitions. These grants are very important to the success of the program so please keep them in your prayers. Don’t forget, we are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization so if you know of any business or organization that would be willing to make a donation to our program please let me know. Any help with fundraising would be greatly appreciated.
Mason-Dixon will once again offer multiple disciplines to our shooters for 2012. Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Olympic Trap will all be available. Participate in one discipline or shoot in them all, it’s totally up to you.
For the most part our practice and competition schedules will remain the same as last season. Trap practices will be on Wednesdays, Sporting Clays will vary, most likely Thursdays or Saturdays depending on the location, and Skeet and Olympic Trap will vary depend on interest. The season will kick off in March and conclude in June after our state championship events and for those who would like to take the next step and travel to Nationals, the season will run a little longer. I’m in the process of finalizing our 2012 schedule and I hope to have a final version to you in a few weeks. Below are a few important dates that I can share at this time, remember all of these are optional.
- April 21 & 22, 2012 – SCTP Mid-Atlantic Regional Olympic Trap Championship, Keystone Shooting Park, Dalmatia, PA

Early Registration:
We are going to open our registration up a little early this year. The SCTP has made their registration information available so I’m going to take advantage of that and do the same. Attached is our 2012 SCTP registration packet. If you qualify for the SCTP (Grades 6-12), and you would like to shoot with the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters in 2012 please fill out the attached forms and mail them back to me with a check for $15 payable to the “Mason-Dixon Clay Busters”. Please make sure you select all the DISCIPLINES (Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Olympic Trap) you would like to participate in on your application.
Registration will be limited to 30 participants in Trap, 20 in Sporting Clays, 20 in Skeet and 20 in Olympic Trap with preference given to returning shooters. Remember, how many disciplines you participate is totally up to you. If you would like to shoot trap only, that is fine. If you would like to shoot all four disciplines, that’s fine also but please make sure you mark the disciplines you intend to participle in on your application prior to sending it in.
Thanks and call me if you have any questions or need additional information.
