Mason-Dixon Clay Busters bring home the Gold

The 2013 Pennsylvania State Junior Olympic Trap Championships concluded this weekend in Dalmatia, Pennsylvania at the Keystone Shooting Park.

Shooters from across the state came to central Pennsylvania to compete for top honors at the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s and USA Shooting’s annual state Olympic Trap championships.

Six shooters from the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters participated in the two day event. Donovan Barry, Mark Beardsley, Dan Cook, Ryan Hayes, Walter Reeves and Sam Toomey.

Mason-Dixon Team

In the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s (SCTP) team portion of the event, the Mason-Dixon Varsity squad of Donovan Barry, Mark Beardsley and Dan Cook finished the weekend in the top spot taking home the team’s first gold medal in an SCTP International Trap team event. This first place finish earned the team $8000 for their MidwayUSA Foundation Scholastic Shooting Trust endowment account!

OlympicTrap

Running concurrently with the SCTP’s team event this weekend was USA Shooting’s Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Trap Championships. Here the top three individuals earn an automatic invitation to represent Pennsylvania later this year in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the USA Shooting’s National Junior Olympic Shotgun Championships.

PA USAS

Finishing third in the Pennsylvania Junior Olympic Trap Championships and taking home the bronze medal was Donovan Barry. Donovan had an outstanding weekend and his third place finish seems even more impressive when you factor in that this was his first time participating in the event.

Finishing first and winning the gold medal in the 125 target event was Mark Beardsley. Mark finished third in this event last year so returning this year and being crowned 2013 Pennsylvania State Junior Olympic Trap Champion was a very rewarding accomplishment for Mark.

All of the Mason-Dixon team members who participated in this event did a terrific job this weekend. It was encouraging to see how they handled the ups and downs of a high pressure event such as this. Their respect and encouragement for one another was a shining example for everyone who attended the event.  Not everyone on the team was able to walk away with an award but from where I stood all of the Mason-Dixon boys were golden and I could not have been more proud of them.

Week 4 – Update

  • This week will be our last Trap practice at IWLA… next week (5/8/13) we will be at Jefferson Sportsmen.
  • Food this Wednesday will be Chicken BBQ and Hot-dogs. Shannon and Vicki have been doing a great job and having food available has been a real blessing! Please ask them if there is something you can do to help or donate to the cause.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get this done, do it now!
  • I need to put our squads together for the State Shoots but when I looked at our signup book I was very disappointed to see how few of you have signed up. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR STATE SHOOTS!
  • Papa John’s Fundraiser – Papa John’s Coupons $20.00 each. Each sheet has over $20 in savings. Each coupon sheet sold $10 to Papa John’s and $10 to the seller. Each seller can use their proceeds towards any cost for shooting events (States, Nationals, etc.) Coupons are available at the kitchen on Wednesday nights. Fundraiser will end on May 29th. Info for Saturday’s SCTP Shoot at Central Penn

Below are the squads for this Saturday’s SCTP Shoot at Central Penn. There are four things I need EVERYONE on the list to do…

Number ONE, make sure you are a current member of the NSCA. All SCTP Sporting Clays shoots are NSCA registered shoots so it is MANDATORY that you be a member in order to participate. If you haven’t already done so, go to http://www.nssa-nsca.org/index.php/nsca-sporting-clays-shooting/nsca-sporting-clays-shooter-information/enroll-renew-membership/ and Enroll or Renew your membership right away.

Number TWO, be on time and ready to shoot. The shoot starts at 9AM so I need everyone at the range ready to go at 8:30AM. Ready to go means ready to go! Eat a good breakfast, clean your gun and get your equipment ready the night before.

Number THREE, make sure you pay Ms. Marcia $29 if you haven’t already done so. Everyone on this list committed to shooting in this event so your name has been submitted to Central Penn for squadding. I need to square up with Central Penn as soon as I get to the range so I will be paying for everyone out of the teams account and I need to have that money reimbursed.

Number FOUR, please send me an email confirming you received this information.

This is going to be a really fun shoot. There will be both squad and individual awards for each of the divisions. Last I heard there will be 4 teams coming from all over the state. I have been told that food will be available for purchase, what I don’t know but knowing the way Central Penn does things I’m sure it will be good!

If I don’t see you tonight at Hopewell, I’ll see you all on Saturday! If you have any questions please let me know.

Make sure you Join/Renew your National Governing Body (NGB)

If you plan on shooting in ANY of our competitions you must first become a member of your discipline’s National Governing Body (NGB). The NGB for Trap is the ATA, for Sporting Clays and Skeet it is the NSSA/NSCA, and for Olympic Trap & Skeet it is USAS. Below are links to the NGB’s and their online registration process. If you haven’t already done so please take care of this ASAP. If you need help I will have my laptop at our April 10 practice and I would be glad to walk you through the process. Make sure you have your credit card.

For Trap you need to join the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA)
Go to http://www.shootata.com/memberships/AIM_Membership.html and select One Year Junior Associate (Under 21) – $10.00

For Sporting Clays and/or Skeet and you need to join National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA)
Go to https://www.nssa-nsca.com/Webforms/NSCAMbrNew/Default.aspx and select Youth Annual ATA + AIM Annual (23 & Under) – $25

For Olympic Trap and/or Skeet you need to join USA Shooting (USAS)
Go to https://www.railstation.org/USAShooting/MembershipRegistration.aspx and choose U.S. Junior Annual – $30

It won’t be long now… are you ready?

Hello all, I have some really great news! We are just a few short weeks away from the official start of the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters 2013 Season! The season kicks off on March 27, 2013 with a Mandatory Team Meeting and Safety Briefing. All team members and their parents are required to attend.

April 4th, we kick things into high gear with our first full team Sporting Clays Division practice followed by our first full team Trap Division Practice on April 10th. We conclude that week with a Sporting Clays Division fun shoot on April 13th at Central Penn. More on the Central Penn fun shoot to follow in a separate email.

Anyway, as you can see things are going to get fast and furious very quickly. Please visit our website for the latest schedule and event information. This is the first of a few emails that I will be sending out this week so please pay attention and follow up when requested. I have a lot on my plate this year and I don’t have time to track people down, so I’m not going to try. This puts more responsibility on you, the athletes and the parents. I would appreciate if you read my emails and when requested responded ASAP. This will in turn benefit you and your shooter.

Important Dates to Remember:

  • March 27, 2013 – Mandatory Team Meeting and Safety Briefing
  • April 4, 2013 – First full team Sporting Clays Division Practice
  • April 10, 2013 – First full team Trap Division Practice

Coaches Meeting Reminder – Update

Just a reminder, we are planning a coaches/volunteers meeting at Jefferson Sportsmen on February 20 at 7pm. We are in need of adults to coach, supervise, score, etc. Experience is good, but certainly not necessary. We have found that the more actively involved our parents are, the better the program. If you or someone you know is interested in helping this year please let me know and make arrangements to attend the meeting.

Just to clarify, the meeting will be held at….

Help Needed and NRA Dinner

Coach/Volunteer Help Needed

We have lost a few coaches so we really need to recruit some additional help this year. We are planning a coaches/volunteers meeting at Jefferson Sportsmen on February 20 at 7pm. We are in need of adults to coach, supervise, score, etc. Experience is good, but certainly not necessary.  We have found that the more actively involved our parents are, the better the program.  If you or someone you know is interested in helping this year please let me know and make arrangements to attend the meeting.

White Rose Friends of NRA Dinner

Please consider attending the White Rose Friends of NRA dinner on March 8, 2013.  Adults and team members alike are welcome to attend. It’s very important that we support the Friends of NRA as they have been a HUGE supporter of the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters for many years.  I think it would be very nice to have a group from Mason-Dixon attend this event together, as it would show our appreciation.

This is a fundraiser, so there will be lots of opportunities to participate in auctions and raffles for some really nice stuff during this event. These are purely optional.  If you’re like me, I’m not in a position to spend a lot of money at the event, however, I am going to attend and do what I can to show my support for a very good organization.

Please let me know if you are able to attend. Tickets are $35 each and include a Full Course Buffet. Here is the list I have so far. This is a great start but it sure would be great if we had a few more young people:

Roger Beardsley
Marcia Beardsley
*Mark Beardsley
*Stephanie Beardsley
Chris Reeves
Mike Michaud
*Joe Heldrich
Matt Stewart
Bob Banchiere
Robin Banchiere

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Dear Mason-Dixon Clay Buster Family,

As the year comes to a close, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for a Happy New Year. Its been an remarkable year for our program and we are looking forward to building on our successes in 2013.

This off-season has been a busy one. We have been working on our schedules, applying for grants, and looking for opportunities to help our program. Don’t forget, we are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization so contributions to our program are tax-deductible. If you know of any business or organization that would be willing to make a donation to our program please let me know. Also, any help with fundraising would be greatly appreciated.

Mason-Dixon will once again offer multiple disciplines to our shooters for 2013. American Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays along with Olympic Trap & Skeet will all be available. Participate in a single discipline or shoot them all, it’s totally up to you.

Our practice schedule will be very similar to how it was in 2012. American Trap practices will be on Wednesday evenings, Sporting Clays will be a mix of Thursday evenings and weekends. We’ll squeeze in a little Skeet here and there, and Olympic Trap & Skeet will have a few weekend dates in early spring. The season will kick off in March and conclude in June after our state championship events. For those who would like to take the next step and travel to Nationals, the season will run into July. Our tentative 2013 schedule is up on the website and I hope to have it finalized in a few weeks. Below are a few important dates that I can share at this time, remember all of these are optional.

And the winner is…..

Mac Carr with Ticket Number 00143 was the winner of the Apple iPad. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this wonderful fundraiser. A special thanks goes out to the Scholastic Shooting Trust Fund and the MidwayUSA Foundation for providing us with the iPad.

We raised an incredible $1,920!!!!… $920 will go toward our 2013 general fund where it will use next year for targets, ammo, and shooting fees. The remaining $1,000 will go into our Scholastic Shooting Trust Endowment Fund where it will be matched 6:1 by Brenda and Larry Potterfield, owners of MidwayUSA the online suppliers of shooting, reloading, gunsmithing supplies. That’s $7,000 into our endowment fund, how sweet is that?

The Scholastic Shooting Trust Endowment Fund provides long term sustainable funding to shooting programs like ours. Last year we received a $1,300 grant from the fund and for 2013 we expect to receive over $2,000!

Thanks to everyone who came out today for the drawing, Holiday Party/Block Shoot. It was so great to see everyone again. BTW… the snacks and goodies were just awesome!

Lastly and for those not ready to put their guns away quite yet…

  • The York-Adams Game and Fish Association Winter Skeet League starts next Saturday, December 15, 2012… $7.00 for junior shooters.
  • Olympic Trap on December 29, 2012 at Keystone Shooting Park. $5.00/round, beginners welcome!

Contact me if you’re interested in attending either of these.

Thanks again and have a great week!

OK gang we are coming down to the wire on our raffle and this iPad would make someone a wonderful Christmas present. Bulk Ammo Order

I am putting together plans for a bulk ammo order. I must have at least 100 flats to place a bulk order and even though I have not selected a supplier, ammo should run approximately $55-$60 per flat (10 boxes or 250 rounds). I have heard back from a few of you but not enough to place an order. If you are interested speak up now or miss out.

This will be the only bulk order we do as a group for next year so if you are interested please send me an estimate of the number of flats you would like. To give you some idea of the amount of ammo you may need, each discipline (Trap, Skeet, Sporting and Olympic) you participate in will require somewhere between 2-4 flats of ammo. I need this information no later than December 9th.

Open Registration

Don’t get left out…we have spots remaining for the 2013 season.  Get your paperwork in ASAP!

Unfortunately, we are woefully behind with our iPad Raffle goals. I continue to try to find ways to fund our program; however, without the support of the team we are going to be forced to start charging a participation fee. I have spoke with coaches from across the country and most programs are costing shooters between $100 and $500. This iPad was a gift so 100% of the money raised goes right back to the team. If you have tickets out, please make arrangements to turn in your stubs and money as soon as you can. If you need tickets please let me know and I’ll send you some. I really need everyone to come together and support this raffle. We started this program in 2006 without a participation fee and I want to do everything in my power to keep it that way.

Save the date…. December 9, 2012

We will be drawing the winner of the iPad at our Holiday get together at 2PM on December 9th at Jefferson Sportsmen. To help make the event a little more exciting we will be having our first Mason-Dixon Block Shoot. A Block Shoot is done with a shotgun and you shoot at a piece of cardboard with an X across it, and the closest “bb” to the center wins. So bring your shotgun and come out and have some fun. As always, snacks and Christmas cookies are always welcome!

Final Fall Fun Shoot

Our final shoot is scheduled for 10AM Friday, November 23rd at Blue Ridge Sporting Clays. This is a 100 Target 5-Stand Competition. Due to the shoots layout, no “on station” coaching will be allowed. Given the format and coaching limitations, this shoot should only be considered by our more experienced shooters. Please contact me ASAP for more information and if you plan to attend.

Bulk Ammo Order

As many of you know, over the past few years our program has been blessed by the NRA with grants for the majority of the ammo needed to participate in our program. As like previous years, I have applied for these same grants for our 2013 season however it will be some time before we know if our requests have been approved. As a safety measure, and because many of you shoot outside of our program, I am making plans for a bulk ammo order. I must have at least 100 flats to place a bulk order and even though I have not selected a supplier, ammo should run approximately $55-$60 per flat (10 boxes or 250 rounds).

Thank you, I have been very pleased with our early registration. As of today we only have 4 spots remaining for the 2013 season. Having this information allows me to plan and schedule events much better than in past years. Speaking of schedules, the trap schedule is just about complete and the others will be out shortly.

Short Notice

I realize this is very short notice but, it looks like it’s going to be a gorgeous day tomorrow (11/10/12) so a few of us are heading down to Loch Raven Trap and Skeet. We plan to get there when they open at 10:00AM and stay until about 12:30 – 1:00PM. If you would like to join us please contact me ASAP.

Trap practices will be on Wednesday evenings, Sporting Clays will be a mix of Thursday evenings and weekends.  iPad Raffle

We have only sold about a third of our tickets so we really need everyone to pitch in and sell a bunch of these for the team. This could be a huge fundraiser for us and all the money raised will go to offset our target and ammo costs. Get back to me with how many tickets you want and I’ll mail them out or I can make arrangements to meet somewhere.
