Team

Just like our younger athletes, we are going to do things a little different for our College or Age 19-23 athletes this year. We understand it’s difficult for our older athletes to make all of our practices so we are going to wave our practice commitment requirement and allow them a little flexibility.

So here is how it’s going to work.  If you are a Fulltime College Student or, if you are age 19-23 and out of High School you may join the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters and shoot for the team. All we ask is that you commit to attending one or more of our State Championships. Once we know who is interested we will set up a meeting to discuss some sort of practice schedule. Below is a list of our State Championships along with their requirements:

Pennsylvania AIM State Trap Championship, June 7, 2014 in Elysburg PA
Requirements:

• Age 19-23 and out of High School
• Be a member in good standing with the ATA
• Be a member in good standing with AIM

 

Pennsylvania SCTP State Trap Championship, June 8, 2014 in Elysburg PA
Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
• Be a member in good standing with the SCTP
• Be a member in good standing with the ATA

 

Pennsylvania SCTP State Skeet Championship, tentatively scheduled for June 22, 2014 in Washington PA
Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
• Be a member in good standing with the SCTP
• Be a member in good standing with the NSSA

Well it’s September and that means the 2013-14 SCTP season is upon us. This is the first of a boatload of emails I will be sending out in the next few weeks.  In addition to the information below, look for updates regarding our early signups (participants and coaches), 2014 practice and competition schedule, and details of our upcoming fall fun shoots.

 

Coaches Training

I’m putting in for a grant for Mason-Dixon to host an NRA Level 1 Shotgun Coach Training School in the spring of 2014. This will be two days of training (Saturday and Sunday) at a local club (date and location TBD).  Upon successful completion, this will provide participants with their NRA Coaching Certification. The cost of the training is $175 and I need a minimum of 15 participants in order to hold the class.  If you are interested in paying the full $175 and attending, please let me know ASAP.  You will be guaranteed a spot, and if the grant comes through, we will refund 100% of what the grant covers.

Sporting Clays Clinic with Anthony Matarese

I’m putting together a Youth Sporting Clays Clinic with Anthony Matarese for this spring.  For those of you who don’t know him, Anthony is one of the top sporting clays shooters and instructors in the country.  This is an incredible opportunity for both the experienced and beginner shooter.

This will be a group lesson at Anthony’s range, M&M Sporting Clays, located in Pennsville, New Jersey (date TBD).  From York, it takes approximately 2 hours to get to M&M depending on traffic.  This three hour group lesson is limited to 10-12 shooters and includes 100 targets.  Cost for the Clinic is $95 per person.  Ammo and transportation to and from M&M are the responsibility of the shooters.  This is not a drop off clinic, a parent or guardian must attend and is required to follow the participant around the course.  Eye and ear protection is mandatory for everyone on the course.

To try and help defray the cost of this event, I have applied for a NRA Grant to cover both the cost of the clinic and the ammo.  I plan to hold this clinic even if we don’t receive the grant so if you are interested in paying the full $95 and attending please let me know ASAP.  You will be guaranteed a spot, and if the grant comes through, we will refund 100% of what the grant covers.

Nationals Hotel

If you have never been to the SCTP Nationals in Sparta, IL you’ll have no idea how big this is … let me assure you that everyone who has been to nationals will know what I’m about to say is BIG NEWS!

My lovely wife was able to reserve nine rooms at the Holiday Inn Express in Sparta, Illinois for the 2014 SCTP American Team National Championship.  These rooms are 2 QUEEN BEDS NONSMOKING with a Check-In date of  Sun Jul-13-2014 and a Check-Out date of Sat Jul-19-2014.  The cost for the six night stay including tax is $800.  This hotel is just FOUR MILES from the World Shooting Complex and is extremely difficult to get. I know it’s early but these rooms are like gold and are first come first served. Please get back to me ASAP if you are interested in reserving one of these rooms.

Wow what a week!!! I wanted to thank all the parents who attended for all of their help and support. We had a few hiccups but overall everything went very well.  I thought the new SCTP management did a great job with the event and I look forward to working with them in the future.

I was very proud of our kids. We shot some great scores, met some new friends, and took home a few awards. Let’s start planning for next year!!! Below are a few pics from the trip.

 

With two down and one to go everyone is excited to kick off Day 1 of Trap. Over 1,500 of the nation’s best youth trap shooters will be descending on the World Shooting Complex so this place is going to be rocking. Today was fantastic… personal bests shot, pizza party, Beretta trick shooter, and to top the day off we had a great reason to stay for the Skeet and Sporting award presentations.  I may be just a little bias but the photo shows the highlight of my day!!!

Well the team has been registered, carts have been rented, ammo purchased, practice targets shot… now we are ready for day one of the 2013 Scholastic Clay Target Program National Team Championships. Lets go Mason-Dixon!!!

After a slight hiccup we are on the road to Sparta!!! Note to self… Check and make sure your drivers license has not expired BEFORE you get to the Enterprise Rental Car counter!!

I just received an email from the Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club coach inviting Mason-Dixon to their SCTP Late Shoot on August 10th. The cost will be $43.00 for 100 registered birds with lunch and team awards. Factoryville is a little over 3 hours north east of us. Sounds like a great opportunity for you to get an advance look at the course where the SCTP States will be held in 2014. I’m not able to make the shoot but I thought I would send it out to the group to see if anyone wanted to go. If we have enough interest, and since I’m not able to attend, I would need someone to act as our SCTP coach. It’s not a big deal and would be happy to discuss what that involves with anyone interested. Sorry for the short notice but I need to have your decision no later the July 12th.

Seventeen members of the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters traveled south of the border to Harvey’s Cedar Gun Club for the Maryland State AIM Trap Championship and gang did not disappoint taking home a boat load of hardware…below are the details.  Thanks to all the coaches and parents who worked so hard to make this event special for the kids!! We had a fantastic weekend at the Pennsylvania State Sporting Clays Championship. Hunting Hills proved to be an outstanding facility and the management did a wonderful job putting on the big event. What & When: The Mason-Dixon Clay Busters will be participating in the PA SCTP State Sporting Clays Championship on Saturday, June 15, 2013. This event is only for youth shooters so there will not be adults participating in the shoot. This SCTP state championship is a team/squad event. Team/squad awards will be given out in six categories based on grade, Rookie – Grades 5 and below, Intermediate Entry Level – Grades 6-8, Intermediate Advanced – Grades 6-8, Senior Junior Varsity – Grades 9-12, Senior Varsity – Grades 9-12, and College Division. In addition to the SCTP team/squad awards, individual awards will be presented for each category.

Where: Hunting Hills, 181 Hunting Hill Road, Dilliner Pennsylvania. When you arrive look for the Mason-Dixon banner and/or our canopies.

Time: TBD..The overall shoot starts at 9:00am. However start times for our squads have yet to be determined. I hope to have this information sooner however squad times will be posted on our website (masondixonclaybusters.com) no later than 10:00pm Friday June 14, 2013. The shoot will be broken into two flights, the AM flight will begin at 9:00am and the PM flight will begin around 12:30pm. I will need all AM Squad shooters at the range no later than 7:45am and I will need all PM Squad shooters at the range 10:45am. If you reserved a cart for the day make sure you arrive a little early to pick it up.

The Day of the Event: SIGN IN AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE. Shooters will be shooing on squads of 3. Squads will be assigned a squad number. Your squad number will tell you where (starting station) and when (AP or PM) your squad will shoot. We will organize everyone from our canopy area where each squad will be assigned an Adult Leader. PAY ATTENTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR ADULT LEADER.

There will be a mandatory safety briefing, 8:30am for AM Squads and 12:00pm for PM Squads. When it’s time, Adult Leaders will round up their squads and lead them to their starting station. Once at your starting station, you will shoot your first targets, just like practice. When you’re done your first station you grab your gear and head over to your next station. Once there you’ll have time to get a quick drink and grab ammo, then its right back up there. You will do this for a total of 100 targets. Don’t rush, but please make every effort to keep things moving. If you arrive at a station before the squad in front has finished, please wait quietly not to disturb them. Parents I need your help with this.

When you’re done shooting head back over to our canopies and wait for further instructions. I need everyone to be available at a moment’s notice for the awards ceremony. They traditionally don’t give us a lot of warning. If you must leave the canopy area, please let someone know when you will be back and how you can be reached. Please don’t put the responsibility on me to hunt you down.

Food: Lunch will be provided to all shooters and parents who purchased extra meals. Lunch will be served to all PM Squads at 11:00am. PM Squads need to eat before they shoot because the food will be gone by the time you finish shooting. AM Squads will eat when they have finished shooting. Pastries and coffee will be available in the morning. Ice Cream will be available in the afternoon.

Additional Information: There will be a lot of teams competing at these shoots so we need to try our best not to disturb the other competitors. That includes no yelling or loud talking near or around the stations and ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY WHILE AT THE RANGE! It’s best to move away from the stations as quickly as possible after you are done shooting.

NO RESTING GUN BARRELLS ON YOUR TOE. IF YOU DO YOUR WHOLE SQUAD WILL BE DISQUALIFIED!

Once the day begins, please do not stray away from our group until we are done with the awards. If you must leave the group please make sure you inform a coach and provide them with a way for you to be reached. Remember this is your day. Make the most of it. Think only positive thoughts and most of all, be safe, have fun and shoot well.

Practice: A practice course will be open from 9:00am – 5:00pm on Friday, June 14, 2013 for anyone who wants to shoot a practice round on their own. Cost is $30 for 100 targets.

Things to remember: This is meant to be fun for the kids, the parents, & everyone involved. Let’s all try and remember that. Good sportsmanship is a MUST! If there is a problem, look me up. We will try and solve it. I have my cell phone with me at all times 443-463-1667.  SCTP rules apply to all shooters & spectators. Ear & eye protection are mandatory.  Please allow 1 hour after last squad comes in for award ceremony to begin.

Everything is set for the big weekend. To help answer some questions I put together a State Shoot Information Package. Included in the package are the squad assignments, range map, competition checklist, and Knoebels picnic map.

Also, don’t forget to bring along the items you signed up for the picnic. The list can be found here.

Squads for the Maryland  SCTP Trap Championship at IWLA Mt. Airy, MD on June 1, 2013. The is a 200 target event so make sure you bring at least 225 rounds of ammo. Location and directions are on the website, please make plans to arrive at the range at 8am. The kitchen will be open and selling breakfast and lunch (pulled pork, burgers, dogs, etc.) will be provided to everyone. Awards presentation will follow shooting.

Bring your lawn chair and plan on being there all day!

Mason-Dixon Clay Busters 2013 PA State AIM and SCTP Trap Shoot Info

What and When: The Mason-Dixon will be participating in two State Trap Championships this year. Both events take place during the Colonial Classic. The Colonial Classic is just a big ATA trap shoot held once a year. The Event is not just for youth teams, there will be lots adults participating in the Colonial Classic part as well.

• The first youth event, the PA AIM State Championship, will be held during the Colonial Classic on Saturday, June 8, 2013. The AIM championship is both a team and individual event. Awards will be given out in five age categories, Pre-Sub – Age 11 and Under, Sub-Junior – Age 12-14, Junior – Age 15-18, and Seniors – Age 19-23.
• The second youth event, PA SCTP State Championship, will be held during the Colonial Classic on Sunday, June 9, 2013. The SCTP championship is a team/squad event. Awards will be given out in six categories based on grade, Rookie – Grades 5 and below, Intermediate Entry Level – Grades 6-8, Intermediate Advanced – Grades 6-8, Senior Junior Varsity – Grades 9-12, Senior Varsity – Grades 9-12, and College Division.

Where: Pennsylvania State Sportsmen’s Association Homegrounds, 405 Monastery Road, Elysburg PA 17824. When you arrive look for the Mason-Dixon banner and our canopies in the parking lot.

Time: TBD..The overall shoot, the Colonial Classic, starts at 10:00 am on Saturday and 9:00 am on Sunday. The start times for our squads have yet to be determined and will be posted on our website (masondixonclaybusters.com) no later than 10PM Friday June 7, 2013. I’m almost positive we will be shooting early both days so, until our squad time are determined, plan to arrive no later than 9:00 am on Saturday and 8:00 am on Sunday.

The Day of the Event: SIGN IN AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE. Shooters will be shooing on squads of 5. Squad will be assigned a squad number. Your squad number will tell you where and approximately when your squad will shoot. We will organize everyone from our canopy area where each squad will be assigned a Squad Coach. PAY ATTENTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR SQUAD COACH. When it’s time, Squad Coaches will round up their squad and lead them to their starting trap house. Once at your starting trap house, you will shoot your first 25 targets, just like practice. When you’re done each 25 you grab your gear and head over to your next trap house. Once there you’ll have time to get a quick drink and grab your next box of ammo, then its back up to the line. You will do this at 4 consecutive trap houses for a total of 100 targets. Don’t rush, but please make every effort to keep things moving. If you arrive at a trap house before the squad in front has finished, please wait quietly not to disturb them. Parents I need your help with this.

When you’re done shooting head back over to our canopies and wait for further instructions. I need everyone to be available at a moment’s notice for the awards ceremony. They traditionally don’t give us a lot of warning. If you must leave the canopy area, please let someone know when you will be back and how you can be reached. Please don’t put the responsibility on me to hunt you down.

Additional Information: There will be a lot of people competing at these shoots, both kids and adults, so we need to try our best not to disturb the other competitors. That includes no yelling or loud talking near or around the trap fields and ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY WHILE AT THE RANGE! It’s best to move away from the trap field as quickly as possible after you are done shooting. This was a problem a few years ago and the coaches were told to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

NO RESTING GUN BARRELLS ON YOUR TOE. IF YOU DO YOUR WHOLE SQUAD WILL BE DISQUALIFIED!

Once the day begins, please do not stray away from our group until we are done with the awards. If you must leave the group please make sure you inform a coach and provide them with a way for you to be reached. Remember this is your day. Make the most of it. Think only positive thoughts and most of all, be safe, have fun and shoot well.

Practice:  The practice traps are located on the lower area. Cost is $4.00 per person for 25 targets. They take cash or check. It’s first come first serve.  I believe they open one hour before the shoot starts but get there early as they get crowed fast. It is very difficult to fit in a practice round before these early events. If you do try please sign in and let your Squad Coach know when you will be back and how you can be reached.

Knoebels: After the shoot and awards on Saturday everyone is invited to join us for a picnic and cookout.  Mike and Mary Ellen Barry have taken the lead on this so please contact bubba@bonnerhockey.com for more information including how you can help. The more help we have with this, the more relaxing and enjoyable it is for everyone.

Things to remember: This is meant to be fun for the kids, the parents, & everyone involved. Let’s all try and remember that. Good sportsmanship is a MUST! If there is a problem, look me up. We will try and solve it. I have my cell phone with me at all times 443-463-1667. ATA, AIM & SCTP rules apply to all shooters & spectators. Ear & eye protection are mandatory.

We have two upcoming events that we really need YOUR volunteer help with….

First, we need people to help coach the Shotgun Station at the Youth Field Day on June 1, 2013 at Izaak Walton League of America York Chapter.  Most of these kids will be first time shooters so at all you need to do is make sure they are safe, control the ammo, and point them down range. All of our Varsity shooters could handle this as well as most of our parents. I know there are a lot of you who are signed up for the Mt Airy Shoot that day but if you are available help it would be greatly appreciated, even if you can only spare an hour or two.  If it were not for the support of the IWLA Mason-Dixon would not exist….please give back if you are able.

Second, Trappers are needed on June 22 to help with the Blue Mt. Chapter Safari Club’s annual AWLS Scholarship Sporting Clays Shoot Fundraiser at Central Penn Sporting Clays.  This is nothing special, you take a group of shooters around the course and you pull for them. You just need to be attentive and focused on what you are doing. Your attendance would be a good gesture to show your appreciation for their support. Last year the Blue Mt. Chapter Safari Club donated $1000 to the Mason-Dixon Clay Busters.

In addition, this is an opportunity to learn about the SCI American Wilderness Leadership School program that sends local youth to Jackson, Wyoming.  The week long program provides participants field activity including outdoor education lesson plans, plant identification, map and compass use, firearm safety, fly tying, survival training, and archery. Students also go on an overnight backpacking trip and a whitewater rafting trip on the Snake River. They also meet with experts trained in wildlife management and conservation.

Please contact me ASAP if you can help with either of these events. We need to make it a priority to give back to these organizations who have supported us. If it were not for their help many of you would not be able to afford to participate in our program.

We are putting together a picnic after the AIM State Trap shoot on Saturday June 8th at Kenobels Amusement Park in Elysburg. Roger has reserved a tent area inside the park to relax and enjoy our meal after a long day of shooting. Please respond back to me at bubba@bonnerhockey.com if you are interested so we can get an firm head count. If you are interested we are asking each family to sign up for one or two items to bring to the picnic  It is all broken out on the attached list just let me know what you are signing up for and I will update the list weekly until we fill all the sign up slots. We are just planning Hamburgers and Hot Dogs with some cold side dishes. Grills and coolers are on the list as well so let me know on those items as well.

I just received this information from the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever. They are having a sporting clays shoot is this Saturday (5/18/13) at Starview Sportsmen’s Association. It will be a 100 target event and the price is $20 for shooters 16 and younger. This will be great shoot to use as practice for states.
