We Need T-shirt Sponsors, Please Help

April 28th is the deadline to get all the t-shirt sponsor forms in. Please help us make this fundraiser a success!

The Mason-Dixon Clay Busters is a local youth clay target shotgun shooting sports team. We would like to offer any vendor or business an opportunity to sponsor our team this year. The team will wear your business name on the back of our sponsor t-shirts providing visibility for your business at local, State and National Competitions, as well as around town. The sponsor fees will fund the purchase of the t-shirts and provide funding for our end of year team awards. The cost of a business card size advertisement block is $100. You may combine blocks to create a larger ad for your company logo if you would like.

Click here to download a 2017 SHIRT SPONSOR FORM

If you have any questions or need additional information please contact Alma Rooney 717-817-0529. Our submission deadline is April 28th. Thank you!

Parents: Sit your athlete down and make them watch this!

The article below references college basketball however, I feel it relates so well to the shooting sports. I see so many kids more concerned about looking cool when they’re at the range or down and mad because they didn’t shoot the score they wanted. Let’s start the new year off right, let’s be positive, uplifting, and celibate all that we accomplish!!!!!

At a press conference during 2016’s women’s Final Four, UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma was kind enough to give the world a glimpse into one of the most important tenants of his coaching philosophy.

The coach for UConn’s women’s team — which has won 109 straight games now — currently has his Huskies in the third round of the NCAA tournament and looking for a fifth straight national title. You could say he knows a thing or two about how to coach.

And in a timeless quote from last year’s tournament that’s resurfacing again a year later, Auriemma took a moment to share some of the wisdom he’s picked up along the way.

Auriemma’s gripe? Players have been bred to care more about how they look and how many points they score than their overall team’s success. If a player is upset because they’re not scoring enough, or if a player on the bench is not invested in her teammates’ performance, she won’t ever see the floor themselves, the coach said.

“We put a huge premium on body language,” Auriemma said. “And if your body language is bad, you will never get in the game. Ever. I don’t care how good you are.”

That’s something players at every level should take note of, especially given who said it.

A BIG Thank you!!!

Thanks to all the Mason-Dixon faithful who made it out to Friday’s White Rose Friends of NRA Banquet. NRA Board Member Maria Heil and Senior Field Representative Kory Enck presented the Mason-Dixon coaches in attendance with two BIG CHECKS totaling over $9,000!!!!

It’s wonderful to have friends and supporters who are as passionate about the future of youth shooting sports as we are!!!!! Thank you NRA Foundation, thank you White Rose Friends of NRA, thank you Mason-Dixon Family!!!!!!

Welcome Mason-Dixon Athletes!!!! March 7th Team Meeting Reminder

Welcome Mason-Dixon Athletes, we would like to welcome everyone to what will be a fun and exciting year!!! Listed below is some important information you will need to know.

Team Meeting:
We are less than a week away from our kick off Team Meeting on March 7th at 6:30pm at Jefferson Sportsmen. This meeting is mandatory for all members and parents. We will be presenting important program information along with volunteer needs and our competition schedule.

Parent participation required:
This is not intended to be a drop off program. A parent or responsible adult is required to be present for any member under 18. If you have an occasion where you have something you must do, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for another parent/adult to take responsibility for your child.

Email and Website:
As I hope you can appreciate, communicating with a group this size is not easy so making phone calls to relay information is just not possible. All of our information will be sent to you via email. Please read what you get and reply as soon as possible when asked. Our website, MasonDixonClayBusters.com, contains lots of valuable information including copies of most of the emails that are sent out. It also contains an up-to-date schedule of events. This will be your go to place for event dates, times, and locations.

Cancellation due to weather:
We rarely cancel due to weather, but when we do it is a last minute decision. The past few years we have been using a service that goes by the name Remind to send out important notifications and last minute communications to our members. Remind is a free, safe, easy-to-use communication tool that helps us connect instantly with participants and parents. To receive messages via text, text @mdcb to (412) 927-1441. Or to receive messages via email, send an email to mdcb@mail.remind.com.

Use of personal firearms:
If you own a Firearm that you would like to use (pending safety inspection) you are welcome to bring it along to the first practice. If you need a loaner gun please contact us at coach@masondixonclaybusters.com and make arrangements.

Ammunition:
Thanks to the NRA we have some ammo to handout; however, it is your responsibility to bring two or three boxes of ammo with you to every practice. For ammo recommendations see our downloadable handout…What ammo should I purchase?

Clothing & Safety Equipment:
Make sure you wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for outside weather. In cooler weather layers work best. Jeans, shorts, sweatshirts, tee shirts are all fine. Shotgun shooters should avoid wearing hoodies or bulky jackets with big collars as they tend to bunch up around the shoulders making proper gun mount difficult. Make sure you wear sturdy closed toe shoes. Sandals or open toe shoes will NOT be permitted on the firing line. Although not required, I highly encourage everyone to wear a hat.

Eye and ear protection must be worn by ALL STUDENTS while live fire is in progress. If you have eye and ear protection, please bring it with you. Spectators are also encouraged to use eye and ear protection. Early in the season much of our shooting will be done under the lights, please make sure you have eye protection with light lenses, dark lenses do not work well in low light or under the lights.

Help Needed:
Support from our parents is the backbone of this program. We will be forming committees so that the burden of these jobs will not fall on any one person. Many hands make light work. Please consider where you can pitch in and come to the team meeting in March prepared to sign up. If prior to the meeting you have any questions or need additional details just let me know.

  • Photo Committee

It’s “Official”, the 2017 SCTP & SASP Nationals will be held at the Cardinal Center in Ohio.

I have included a link to the hotel Marcia and I booked for next year. There is not much left but they have a “No up front charge -FREE Cancellation” rate that you may want to consider booking. Again that is for the nights of July 7th with a check out date of July 16th. Make sure that whatever you do you have the ability to cancel without penalty if something were to change.

*******

Also, there have been a few people talking about camping together next year. Dennis DeVoe has offered to put together a list so when the Cardinal Center campground opens up we will be ready to go.

Any team members interested in camping at the 2017 SCTP/SASP Nationals, send Dennis a reply by December 31, 2016. Dennis is going to try for a group of campsites together in the 800 row of the campground. (The wooded row where a few team members stayed last year).  The sites do not have sewer, but honey pot service is available.

Please contact Dennis with your camper size, number of slides, and dates you plan to stay. (The event runs from July 8-15,2017. If you plan on staying for the awards on Saturday, I recommend staying until the 16th and leaving in the morning.)

2016-17 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters Registration Information

Below is a link to the 2016-17 Mason-Dixon Clay Busters Registration Package. As always, returning team members get first crack at our openings. On January 15, 2017 all remaining spots will open up to new members.

Fees that we charge represents only a fraction of the actual cost of our program. This deep discount is made possible by our fundraising efforts, grants, and individual donations that help us lower the cost of our program to our Athletes. Please take a moment to check out our website for a listing of our sponsors and make it a priority to thank them!

What’s New?
We have made a few changes to our program for 2017. First, our Trap practices will move from Wednesday to Tuesday! We feel this is a positive move, one that will make our program available to many more families.

Secondly and I’m saying this with deep regret, we have closed our Sporting Clays division to new members. Only athletes who were on the team (Trap, Skeet, or Sporting) in 2016 will be allowed to register for Sporting Clays in 2017. This limited Sporting Clays division will run through the 2017 season however the discipline will be eliminated in 2018. As always, it comes down to finding a sufficient number of dedicated, qualified, volunteer coaches for each of our disciplines. If we don’t have the coaches, we can’t offer the discipline.  If our situations changes, and we are able to acquire additional coaching, this all could change. If you, or anyone you know, would like become a volunteer coach please have them contact me at number/email listed below.

Some basic information:
There are a limited number of openings in each Division. Openings will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Once filled these Divisions will be closed and additional members will not be accepted.

  • Sporting Clays Division (Closed to new members. Only open to athletes who were on the team (Trap, Skeet, or Sporting) in 2016)

2016 Fall Fun Youth Trap League – Final Results

Well the results are in and we have our winners. Before I get to the names, first let me say that I was very proud of each and every one of you who participated in the league. I received nothing but positive feedback from the adults at the club. That reflects very well on Mason-Dixon and because of that I say… Thank You and job well done! Coaches and scorers, thank you for your hard work and commitment to the program, none of this would be possible without your help!

Now for the results… Taking first place in our Junior Division and our high over all shooter, Noah Temple. Noah put up some outstanding scores this fall and he really has come a long way. Runner-up in the Junior Division goes to David Bell. The runner-up spot was not decided until the last round of the last night.

In the Sub-Junior Division, Dawson Sterner was our winner. In route to the Sub-Junior Division title, Dawson post the second highest overall league score, a impressive accomplishment from a Sub-Junior shooter. Taking the runner-up award in the Sub-Junior Division was Gianna Patti. Gianna had a great fall league and she did most of it with an injured ankle and a boot cast on her foot.

Congratulations go out to all of our winners…great job!

I saw some really good shooting out there the past few weeks and I’m sure all that hard work and effort is going to pay off in the Spring!

Trap is officially moving to Tuesday!

Holding Trap practice on Wednesday has been a problem and something we have wanted to change for years. Most of the churches in the area hold their youth group on Wednesday nights. We have a lot of team members, and potential team members, who are struggling with this conflict. I support and encourage attending youth group and never want to put a kid in a position to choose shooting over church or vice-versa.

We have worked out a plan with our ranges and coaches to move our Trap practices to Tuesday evenings. It will take some adjusting for some, and I thank you for that; however, I believe this is a positive move for the program and it will benefit us in the long run.

Starting spring of 2017 all Trap practices and team meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings. Our new schedule and registration is being finalized and you should be receiving information sometime mid to late November. As always, current team members will have first opportunity to register before registration is opened to the public.

Thank you for your continued support as we make this transition!

Awards Banquet and Fundraiser Dinner a Huge Success!!!

Sorry this has taken me so long to get out…

The final results are in and I’m happy to say that our inaugural Awards Banquet and Fundraiser Dinner was an overwhelming success! We were able to share fellowship over a good meal, recognize and celebrate our athletes & coaches, and raise over $1,000.

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to put this on. There was a lot of hard work behind the scenes, work that had to happen for this to take place. I would also like to thank everyone who went out and got donations, and all of the businesses who donated auction items. I was so impressed with what we raised. This money goes right back to the team to help keep the costs as low as possible.

I heard nothing but positive feedback from the group so, we are moving forward with plans to do it again next year. The date still needs to be finalized but, I can tell you we are hoping it will be around the same time as this years. I will let you know as soon as we know. It’s never too early to start thinking about auction items and ideas for next year!

Thank you so much for your support.

I have included a link to some photos of the event, enjoy!

Mason-Dixon in the News

We had a special guest visit us Thursday at Glen Rock during our Fall Fun League. Kate Penn form the York Daily Record was doing an article and wanted to speak with our kids about being safe around firearms. The result was a very positive article highlighting some of our team members and coaches. Kate’s article is due to hit the street today however you can view an online version, including a video, at the link below.

2016 Fall Fun Youth Trap League – Week #4 Results

The gang was back at it Thursday for Week #4 of our Fall Fun Trap League. Junior Noah Temple, this week’s top gun, seems to have taken control of the lead in the Junior Division; however, the runner up spot is still very much up for grabs. First year shooter Hunter Orr led this weeks Sub-Junior Division with a very nice 37. With one week remaining, 3 of the 4 awards are still undecided. Awards will be handed out next Thursday after shooting, please make plans to stay and show your support to our winners.

Don’t forget, results are based on your 4 best scores. Make-up rounds are permitted for anyone who missed a week. We will be at Glen Rock starting at 4pm on the 20th for anyone who wants to make-up a week and try to improve their league standings.

SCTP Nationals at Cardinal Center

I haven’t received anything “Official” from the SCTP regarding where Nationals will be held next year but a friend of mine just got back from a recent trip to Cardinal Center where they were handing out the flyers below. Again this is not “Official” but I think its safe to assume that we will be back in Ohio for the SCTP Nationals in 2017.

I have included a link to the hotel Marcia and I booked for next year. They have a “No up front charge -FREE Cancellation” rate that you may want to consider booking.
